There are plenty of caravan parks on the west side of Loch Lomond, and some have static 'vans so the A82 can't be that bad!  In a previous live, OH and I were managers of a park at Balloch and we never had anyone complain about the A82.

Having since towed it ourselves, however, it wouldn't be our first choice.  Last time we did we were going to the Runrig concert on the shores of Loch Ness and, not fancying the return journey, we carried on north to Inverness then south on the A9 - way less stress!

That said, we safely negotiated all the narrow stretches of the A82, despite meeting tour buses, articulated lorries and other tourers, only to have a [8D] muppet from Liverpool hit us with a Fiesta in Fort William!  He'd missed the entrance to his B&B and was reversing (very badly) so managed to stray into our lane and decimate our wheel spat and the water heater vent cover thing.  That said, the awning skirt channel on the offside of the 'van did way more damage than the £80 worth he did to the 'van [}:)]!!!!  He tried to say it was our fault but an independent witness and someone travelling in the car with him both said he was to blame so he paid up[:o)] !!

Whichever way you come, enjoy your visit and remember to adjust your watches for the time difference!![;)][:)][;)]

avoid loch lomond north of tarbet . got caught in traffic at very tight and  windy section when low loader with yacht and coach came in opposite direction . an absolute nightmare ensued with a convoy of cars ; caravans; buses etc having to reverse back around bends to allow them to pass best to go via stirling to crianlarich

FOR steve6491, we are setting off on Sunday 14/6 to CC site Killin for the night & then upto CC site Morvich for 6 nights  via A74,M80, A84 route to avoid Loch Lomond side as we thought the road was horrendous last time we travelled it 8 years ago, we then intend to travel upto CC site Dunnet Bay via the  A890 from Kyle of Lochalsh using the A832 & A835 to Dingwall & then the A9 to Dunnet Bay if you are en route then look out for a black Terracan ( 4wd ) & white twin axle van

We drove to and from Oban two weeks ago, taking the A82 Loch Lomond route.  NEVER AGAIN!  The  road to Tarbert was fine, but after that the road changes completely, very VERY narrow (single lane in places) and very twisty. Also in places the roadside is just rockface. How we didnt bump the van on the corners I dont know. They are also resurfacing this stretch of road at the moment (not before time!) so the road surface is very poor.  We have an Xtrail and a 22 foot caravan  (so not a huge outfit) and we found it a nightmare, even though OH is experienced driver and tower through his job.  At one point we were faced with three huge tourist buses in convoy coming in the other direction. We all just stopped, OH and coach drivers all got out and had a discussion, then the first two drivers swapped coaches  and we inched past each other, It took about ten minutes to inch past them.

We love the west coast but this was our first time in our caravan. We will be trying the other route in future!

i have been telling the grandson some tales about haggis

he thinks they have little wings but cannot fly

one leg is shorter than the other because they run round mountains

you can only catch them at 4 mins to 4 am when they have a little rest

and only with a net that reaches all the way to england

if you dont catch one you can go to the chip shop and get a haggis supper

mother was from fraserburgh or the broch so please excuse my half scottish interpretation

thanks for alll the answers (some slighly off tact but funny non the less)  :) so i got to watch out for hills, bends, midges, hagis, coaches, lorries and stupid drivers, better not show OH or she might change her mind. Think the sat nav might just get put away and good old map comes out, forgot route birmingham to Lockerbie , Lockerbie to oban, oban to leven, leven back to Lockerbie and finally  Lockerbie  back home 2 weeks, god knows how many miles but who cares it better than working for a living

We are off to Perthshire in August and i can't wait.  The only advice i can give is - the scenery is stunning so it's lucky that you are towing and will be going slower to see it all.

Being mostly English i do get funny looks when i ask for chips with my haggis

You will have a great time

oh the 'tourist' mistake of asking for haggis & chips! DH is well trained now to ask for a haggis supper or just a poke of chips if we aren't feeling to hungry.

We are gearing up for a weekend at moffat in the next few weeks taking in the fantastic scenery of the devil's beef tub then maybe on to Kelso to see dad.

Sept time we are planning a week on the west coast, hopefully with a detour to Kirkintilloch on the way up to visit family and depending on where we go, the ferry to Skype to visit my aunt.

Return journey may be made via Dundee to see gran before stopping in to home 'old Reekie before the continued journey to Yorkshire.

That's what I love about caravanning, the freedom to do whatever the heart desire's & go where you please!

Hope everyone enjoys their holiday!

Hope everyone

If possible try to avoid using the route up the A82 during the day, you will find the roads a lot quieter after about 7pm. I have found in the past that most larger vehicle drivers are extremly helpful on the tighter stretches and most will be happy to help get past you and vice versa! If you are doing the journey from the south in stages then a stop at Kirkpatrick fleming at Bruces Cave caravan site is a great spot. Jan and Ali have a great wee site there and you may just spot Papa Pip and nana Joan relaxing in front of their thomson! We were there last weekend and there were lots were several folks pulling in for the night before heading further into Gods Country. One couple stayed over through the day in order to travel the next leg during the early hours to get ahead of the traffic. Hope to see them again on their return journey as they are making a point of stopping at Bruces cave again and are hoping to make it a couple of nights next time!

Safe Journeys!

i admit i hate the A82 with a passion, would advise going M80 to stirling then up the callander road to crianlarich

I used that route on Sunday, coming back from Invercoe.  It's easier and much quicker than doing the Glasgow, A82, Loch Lomond trek to get to Crianlarich.

Cheers
Andrew

I am doing the journey in stages.

  • South West Wales to Lake District - 275 miles (Stop 4 nights)
  • Lake District to Bunree CC Site - 222 miles (Stop 8 nights)
  • Bunree to Blackpool  - 292 miles (Stop 2 nights)
  • Blackpool to Cotswolds - 172 miles (Stop 4 nights)
  • Back to SWW Wales - 137 miles.

I am allowing 6hrs to do both leg 2 and 3.  Is that realistic?
