norm, i have a tom tom one and tbh i rarely use it especially when towing as i just dont trust the thing. i usually buy a new OS road map every 2 years and fing that a lot better. satnav is great in towns but apart from that a £3 map does as good a job, for pacenotes/directions i take the essentials from rac route planner and give them to darling mother to shout out (she has a crap sense of direction and cannae read a map)

if iris can read a map or shout out pacenotes i would stick to that

if it hadnt been for santa i wouldnt have got satnav

i had the option to have any make for work tried a few a decided on the tom tom 720 , to avoid little lanes always use fastest route not shortest, had a few hiccups but just used common sense, reg it on line and get regular updates, you can also buy upgrades.Forgot to say i use it to plan routes for my truck at work .

tomtoms have the bluetooth too (some of them), much more popular and much more support, i know work friends who have bought others, sold them and bought a tomtom. A workmate had the tomtom with bluetooth, it had a very clear handsfree voice, better than his nokia car kit.

maps are ok and a great back up, but when your are on your own or with someone who cannot mapread satnavs are a godsend, when towing i always let it calc the route beforehand and check it on the OS map.

the one thing i love about them is that if you find a beach or similar beauty spot on the OS map you can find it on the tomtom and navigate to it, I've been down lovely roads in cornwall that i didn't know existed and most have no signposts!!
