I think WXXXERs could be a too stronger word for them,I keep my van outside our house, and when we go away for a weekend or a week or so,when we come back we are asked what it was like,we tell them and I ask what they have done, its always the same answer, pub, takeaway, pub takeaway,Etc and then the taxi there and back,do they have a life ????? can you tell me who looks out for us who enjoys our way of going away and the comment on what we have and why we love it and then say someones van is an eyesore so to speak, beats me.

Interesting views on this post. I don't think jealousy comes into it.

Maybe the complainant doesn't like looking at a caravan. One poster admitted their van isn't particularly pleasent to look at and previously posted that they made sarcastic comments about a neighbour's speedboat on the drive. I guess I'm lucky living on a development with a covenant stating that caravans & boats shouldn't be kept on the drives. We used to have a caravan 15 years ago but after a few years of caravanning, you instinctively know it's time to give up when planning a holiday and the whole family says anything that doesn't involve the caravan.

There are some sad people about who are only happy if they are causing other people grief. There are others with the cavaman mentality, it you don't understand something or it isn't the kind of thing you would do, attack it.

Perhaps you could have told your neighbours, that's what we do when we bring ours home from storage for a short while, I tell the neighbours that we will be bringing it home and I tell them how long it will be there, most people are happy once they know it's not going to be there permanent.

I have my caravan parked in my drive and when I told my neighbours I was getting one I could see that they were a little scepticle.  After getting it I gave them all the guided tour and asked them their opinion.  There initial reaction when I told them I was getting one was 2 things, first, what peice of crap am I going to put in the drive and secondly from a safety point of view, when the van is not there it is obvious and inviting to theifs.

I have worked with the neighbours to try and minimise the impact as I don't have a big drive and it is a big van.  When away my neighbours have a key to the house and do the blinds and they also park their cars in my drive when I am away.  This makes me and them feel safer.

I guess what I am saying that not all neighbours are WXXXXERS..

That aside I do have old yans that moan, but they moan about everything so it is just one more thing for them

Good luck with yours

Cheers

Richard

Is it on your property or is it council property? Or are you talking about it being on a road?

If it is on council property or a public road there are probably rules that you must abide by.

i am the same, i told all the neighbours beforehand and a few were worried about having the gas bottles but as i said with 2 petrol cars on the drive the van wouldnt make much difference. i keep my van clean even in winter and the neighbours give me a shove on and off the drive, suffice to say i give them a beer or 3

the caravan is normally took out the night before we go away and brought round to the front, on the road till we leave the next day.

I must say our neighbours are normally ok when caravan is out, normally asking where we are going and telling us to have a nice time.  Well the ones that speak anyway, there are only 5 houses in the street where you actually see anyone !!

The council guy asked where we normally kept it and my hubby told him our back garden, safe and secure, he then said "oh you might not be able to keep it there", i wish now we had put it straight into the garden!!!    It is not a eyesore either, it is immaculate, all clean and tidy, my husband even polished it again last night (im sure that was just to annoy the complainers 17

Thats all I need for them to now come back and say we cant keep it in our garden. (it is a council property), though we did ask when we got the house if we could keep it there and the guy said yes no problem.

Anyway he said it is fine there till we go away next week, so its staying!!!  We told him it would be straight back into our garden when we get back.

Sooooooooooooooo looking forward to getting away, my first 14 night trip out.

i wouldnt leave mine in the street for any more than a hour as the street is very busy and i wouldnt trust the local drivers not to see the van (yeah i know 8 feet high, white etc), fortunately a family friend lives in a cul-de-sac 100 yards away with 2 houses so if i am late back and cant be bothered shoving the van about i just abandon the rig there

i checked with the council before i got my van and as there isnt anything stopping me legally from parking my van on the drive the neighbours cant complain. (drive was our garden before we built the drive anyway) but it is amazing what a beer and a few sweeties can achieve

This may well have been avoided if you had mentioned to the neighbours you wanted to park the caravan on the road for a few days. When we bought hours, we had it on the road for a week. Before I collected it I mentioned this to the neighbours and they were fine with it, even shared our excitement for it and all wanted a look when we got it. Another neighbour had a caravan on the street (admittedly it has a broken window and is an eyesore) and all the neighbours had been moaning about it. This was the reason we put the van in storage rather than keep it on the road. There are only six houses in the street and we are at the end, so the only thing we would be obstructing is our window. We have since concreted our drive and widened the gates so we can get it there, again, having mentioned it to the neighbours before proceding.

People tend to be more negative when they are surprised. If they had been prepared for this then they may not have complained.

Think your self lucky it was only the Council who turned up - we had two police officers!  A few years ago we pulled our van outside our house to load for an early morning drive off - was in no-ones way, happily sitting there minding its own business and the police called to say someone had complained.  Wouldnt say who, they totally agreed that we were doing no harm whatsoever and left us in peace.  Thankfully we no longer live there now!

we are away at the moment, home tomorrow and spoke to our daughter who says the neighbours have all their 6 piles of rot strategically lined up to make it virtually impossible to get in the drive when we get home.

sad sad b****rds.

i can see us having to offload our new to us senator wyoming because of these idiots purposely making it impossible to get in or out.

its just going to be too big to fit between all the badly parked rotboxes

I thought it was illegal to leave a caravan on the road unhitched? Or are we talking hitched?

I for one think they dont look nice on drives - I limit when mine is at home - my neighbours are great, but vans look better in a nice site not on a drive.

for a lot of people the drive is there only option i have seen the damage done on so called storage sites and as long as the van is road worthy the police cant stop you parking in the street unless it is causing an obstruction this i have checked up on

Any vehicle/trailer parked on a road can technically be causing an obstruction.
A caravan, when not attached to the towing vehicle is classed as a trailer.
