OK most of these truckers are doing what ?? delivering stuff, stuff you eat or anything else in life that you would like to buy for whatever reason,

40 mph on a single carriage way,OK if your towing and there is a good stretch you could get by safely,50 mph on a duel carriage way, towing to overtake him you would need at lot longer than the 40 mph as you are only doing 10 mph more than the truck,56 mph M/ways you will need a hell of a long stretch to get by the truck as you SHOULD only be doing 60 mph, give the guys a break they are there to get stuff you buy so you can have a good holiday,an if your going on holiday why the rush to get there, your supposed to have a relaxing drive,if you get stuck behind me in my camper,TUFF.

If your stuck behind a Cullina its mainly down to that firm having what we call a spy in the cab, we have them at Royal Mail.

Its a little black box that records everything they are doing while driving, the ones in our lorrys at Royal Mail record speed and braking amongst other things it also gives the office realtime tracking of where the lorry is down to 1 meter.

Big Brother is watching kind of stuff, they use it at our place to take people off driving if they think they are a danger to other road users.

as there seems to be many truck drivers out there perhaps one of you can give a good excuse for takeing in some occasions several miles to overtake a fellow trucker doing 47.5mph while the overtaker can only manage 48mp usualy on an incline

I had to follow (together with 40/50 other road users)1 inconsiderate ass##le for over 4 miles doing just that on a  m/way

PS my father was a hgv driver for most of his life when truckers were known as the Knights of the road.A title that has long lost favore with the general public

we all have to stick to the limits now, when towing or hauling big uns.!!!

restrictions were imposed on motorways etc.on hgv's and coaches because of the few silly b********.who used the third lane like a racetrack(certain coaches)and speeding foreigners truckers.

the only problem is that restricting the speed is doing more damage and causing more maintainance requirements on larger vehicles, the engine is not working to its full capacity and therefore this causes more problems to develop.

don't get me wrong,i have driven all my working life (hgv's,coaches etc.both here and in europe, speed limits are essential, but the penalties are not conversant with the crime,up the limiters on hgv's and coaches and allow the coaches to use the third lane again and you would relieve some of the conjestion on motorways, but impose higher fines etc.for those who disregard the law.

yes, they were either towing caravans like myselfor other lighter loaded faster goods vehicles & for all 4 miles I held back to enable the Idiot to fall back & pull in behind the artic he could not get past & to cap it when one motor pulling a camper went into the outside lane to get past, the idiot had the temerity to give him a long blast on his horn

I also find having to do 40 on singe carriageway roads a right pain, my lorry isn't happy at 40 but is fine at around 45mph so I put it on 45 & hope.

To be honest, you don't get far by going too fast anyway. My mate got fed up running at 50mph on the motorway when fuel went through the roof. I was then spending over £3K a month on fuel including VAT & decided to cut my own speed to try & save some.

Our journey was an hour & he went off on his limiter at 56mph, when I got back to the plant, he was just walking across to the office. He hadn't gained anything but I'd saved a drop of fuel (I hope)

As someone said earlier in this thread, your licence could be lost in one journey so we have to be wary of the limits & hope other motorists don't take silly risks trying to overtake us. The TV programme, Police camera action is nothing compared to what can be seen from a lorry cab these days. Some of the chances people take are unbelievable & simply not worth it.

No HGV driver wants to hold up traffic any more than a caravanner does, they're all just trying to get somewhere or do a job & everyone wants to get home in one piece. The most vauable thing on the road is Life yet sadly everyone considers it to be Time.

I would rather a lorry driver held me up for a few mins than break the law and exceed the speed limit!
Why are people in such a hurry?

Blimey Old Chap, you certainly got out of the wrong side of the bed when you wrote that one didn't you. Thank the lord you're up the far end of the M4 from me. I never allow myself to be intimidated by some upset gentleman trying to overtake me in dangerous situations. I drive my truck to its best possible safety/performance combination. I don't hold up those behind me on purpose, I'm only trying to deliver something somewhere to someone who bought it & needs me to deliver it.

Lorries never go anywhere for the sake of it, they're always going to either take or colect something for someone. They're restricted from every angle by one regulation or law & have to make the most of every minute.

Considering you were only 12 or so mph under the limit for your outfit, what the devil have you got to complain about. If the lorries you were following were on a motorway & only capable of achieving 48 MPH the hill must have been quite steep, not many motorway inclines pull my lorry below 50 mph at worst. Todys lorries are mostly high powered & well geared for the job so you won't get held up that much by a modern lorry.

My problem with the 40mph limit for trucks is that some don't stick to it.

A couple of times a year I tow along the A75 in Scotland (the Gretna/Dumfries/Stranraer road) and often get chased along that single carriageway road by artics - and I'm doing 50mph!

Of course, there's the ferry terminal at Stranraer, and the drivers have a boat to catch, so maybe their right peg gets a bit heavy...

This isn't all truckers, of course, but enough of them for it to be necessary for me to pull over into a layby and let them pass a couple of times per trip.

If I had made a bad misjudgement in what my vehicle was capable of Such as overtaking, I would have dropped back & tucked in behind to allow others to get by.& that is my complaint ,not the fact that he made the mistake but that he did not care about any one else behind, & its not an uncommon sight to see on the road today.

the driver prob did care but if you knew anything about drivin a hgv you would know that every minute counts,we are restricted by law on how long we can drive for,and there is no flexibility with the law. A driver at my work was given a fine for only havin a 44 min break instead of a 45 min break!!!! with the new digital tacho a alarm goes of when you are 15 mins before a break so if you are not back in the yard you could end up havin a night out a couple of miles from home.so if you are stuck behind a lorry that is a little slower than you for miles you get p...off so you try to get by it.
