Back to Pro Tec.....they describe theirs as having an inner layer which is "non abrasive ensuring no scratching or marking to your windows or bodywork". Not all suppliers make such a claim. We are all familiar with advertising claims and are probably cynical of them, but where do you stand if this assertion is incorrect? What comfort is there when laying out some £360 odd?
If you buy from Pro Tec the Sale and Supply of Goods to Consumers Regulations 2002 Regulations say that such public statements made by manufacturers about the specific characteristics of the goods, particularly in advertising or on labelling, have to be factually correct – and form part of the retailer’s contract with the consumer.
So, if you do get scratches, which are exclusively down to a defect in the manufacture you can claim damages for any direct and predictable expense arising as a result of being supplied with faulty goods. Pro Tec would have to compensate you for any repairs to your caravan. So you would expect (or hope) that Pro Tec must be fairly confident in their product because otherwise their advertising leaves them susceptible to quite some level of compensation should their claim be erroneous.
I mention "scratches, which are exclusively down to a defect in the manufacture". Read the labels/instructions and follow their requirements. Some scratching occurs from covers because owners of vans put the covers on when the van is dirty and the cover then moves the mud etc around causing scratches.
Remember that the Regulation I have quoted applies if you buy from Pro Tec and not if you buy from an individual not selling as a business, say on ebay. So to protect your position as a consumer you need to set up your contract for buying the cover correctly.
If you get scratching you may just decide to claim for the repairs from your insurers (if you are covered for that). Once they know that you used a Pro Tec cover then your insurers would probably be onto Pro Tec to recover whatever the insurers pay out. That's how these cases work.
If the cover you buy costs about £85 (new), well, you get what you pay for and at that price I am guessing it won't be much.
