I have just bought my first van and the only thing I was thinking about was how close to home I could get storage. I have now got storage about 2k from the house. A farmer needing extra income. Security gates and lights also just fitted CCTV. He charges £100 for 6 months. So considering I have virtually no diesel to fork out on I thought I have a good deal. Also peace of mind as when I am out on my daily jog (well every other day) I can have a look in at my pride and joy.
My van is in storage about 10ish miles away and in the compound there are many caravans owned by folk who live in the West Riding and who like to come to the East Coast for their hols. They prefer to tow the van just a few miles rather than all the way from such places as Leeds, Sheffield, Wakefield. So your idea is not unusual

If you forget something, you will usually fond out when you get to your destination rather than when you get to the van (unless it is the towing mirrors or towbar perhaps), so I cannot see a major problem there.
One issue could be annual servicing as you either have to do it when on holiday or you have a real long trip. Also we have had calls from our service area that we have not locked the battery cover (after using the mover) so I was glad the storage is near work so I could sort out the next day.
Just ensure that your insurance are aware that it is stored so far away.
Ours used to be stored about 100 miles from home when we first bought it as we always seemed to head that way it reduced the ammount of towing we did and (in theory) the ammount of fuel we used. Unfortunately, it didn't work out that way in the end as we forever seemed to be picking the van up and heading back the way we came. We then started storing it closer to home for a while until I finally got our driveway widened enough to store it at home.
One thing I learnt the hard way is to check and double check you have everything out of the caravan you will need. I managed to leave our house keys in the caravan, not realising until I got home, giving me a 60 mile trip home, back to the van and back home with the keys. Fortunately it wasn't the first storage site we were on giving a 300 mile round trip!
The main disadvantage I can see is that during the winter months you will have to make periodic trips to change the battery to keep the power alive for alarm and tracker - if you have them
