Caravans are specifically and explicitly forbidden by law from Sutton Bank, with on-road signage to that effect and an approved diversionary route also signposted.
Don't know whether the others are in the same situation, but I suspect not.

Now Now all- didn't want to cause any arguments between members- advice is always gladly accepted, and in my case I am please to see that one gent has told us all of other routes that are towable and one that is not, you may argue the point but if sinage is there then this must be adhered to--it is a law thing. This route was just because if we want to head over to the Buxton are and Derbyshire, we have to go through Hazel Grove and that is a --well pain in the butt- especially when lorry delivery drivers just decide- right i will stop here and deliver..........aarrgghh.....!!
Cheers everyone but stop arguing. many thanks Maureen-- Garys wife- the tower of the family.
The point is that it is possible to tow up Sutton Bank (at least for some cars/caravans) but it's not advisable or legal. If plod spots you even on the road between the "caravans prohibited" signs he can and will nick you. And towing up it is one thing. If you have to stop on it to allow other vehicles coming round the hairpin to pass, hill-starting with some dingbat parked right behind you honking the horn might be something else entirely.
I agree about the diversion, though - it's rubbish.

Done the Cat & Fiddle many times, it's actually a pleasure to tow and a good route over to North Wales, bikers are more than a bit mad around there though and plenty of big trucks use it.
I came that way on Friday evening. I had a lovely drive back from Sheffield via Castleton, Dove Holes, Buxton, and the Cat and Fiddle, and knocked over an hour off the journey there!
It took me 2 hours and forty minutes on the way there and just 90 minutes on the way back. 2 1/2 hours to Nottingham last month... I'm going cross country from now on. Sheesh!!!
What's with all this macho nonsense about towing caravans up big twisty hills regardless of the law. I guess its a man thing but as a responsible road user I just don't get it!
A bit less man bashing if you don't mind, could just as easily be a woman doing that, either way breaking the law because you some how think it does not apply to you is both daft and arrogant imo whoever is doing it.
