When we were looking for our secondhand 'van last year i would look at where the loo hatch was because i wouldn't want to have to take the cassette out in the awning. I didn't bother looking at any that had the toilet on the awning side lol. With the brand new 'vans i did look at where the toilets were and i'm sure that if they were on the awning side then the hatch was at the back and not on the awning side if that helps. For some reason i only like the 'vans with the toilets on the left hand side anyway. With the Bailey Rangers i liked the layout of the 520/4 but not the one with the toilet on the left hand side.
We've ordered a porch awning and can't wait to see how it works, hoping we can do away with the huge awning forever lol
Our toilet compartment is on the awning side, but it's not a problem. We'd never empty the cassette, or use the toilet, when we had anyone in the awning. The toilet compartment window is at the back of the van. You can always empty the cassette first thing in the morning, when no-one else is up and around.
I can imagine that it might be more of a problem when you use 'sites' without any facilities, but we never do.

Further to my previous post, we very rarely use sites with facilites, so have to use our own loo. And we camp with a group of friends - our awning is often the evening social area as it's the biggest (when we have the full awning up) - using the loo is not given a second thought, even when we are all in the awning. After all, it's something every single one of us (even the Queen!!) has to do, so what's the problem - no-one can see in!! And my loo and cassette don't leak, even a dribble, so carrying it through the awning is no problem - we don't use a groundsheet anyway. Which side the toilet cassette door is placed is not something I would give any thought to when choosing a 'van.
Ours is on the awning side, Never see a problem with emptying it through the awning? It wasn't that long ago caravans didn't have cassette toilets so you had to empty the bottom tank by walking it all the way through the caravan and awning!
Never bothers us! And when we are using the porch or the spacelite its outside anyway
