Our "new to us" Hymer has blinds on all the windows but the curtains are just for show and don't actually draw. The van is fitted with net curtains (sounds horrible but looks rather nice) which I leave drawn when the van is in storage.

I am reluctant to leave the blinds down, so am thinking of investing in some cheap fleece throws to cover the upholstery to stop fading from the sunlight and to pull all the cushions away from the walls in winter ... this is recommended in the handbook. Also tells you to open all the cupboards and lockers for proper circulation of air when it's not used for any length of time.

My father-in-law suffered weak springs ... to his blinds, when closed over the winter.

I leave the blinds and curtains open (would the sun not 'bleach' the curtain lining if left shut?) I turn all seat cushions over and put the front part at the back so no cushion fabric is visible to the sun and this has always worked ok for us.

As for deterring any 'undesirables' I reckon if you show you've nothing to hide you're less likely to suffer a break-in; a belief confirmed by plod when a neighbour had his car broken into some years ago and was advised on the same.

our blinds pull upwards to close so no springs to worry about . but yes always shut

Funny, that. We always open our curtains too, but we can't see through with an end washroom. I suppose it's the thought that if anything happens inside the van during a journey, like a wardrobe cupboard coming open (or forgetting to shut the washroom door, as we have done), a glance in the mirror might alert you to the problem enabling you to right the problem before any damage occurs.

We have made a set of blinds, on curtain wire, using cream coloured blackout blind material. We put these up at all the windows and the door and then leave the normal blinds and curtains open when we put the van back into storage. Putting the blackouts up takes less than 5 minutes.
