I think the attitude that "the customer is your enemy" only works for one-off sales. Now, the average salesman/woman might not care about what's going to happen to her employer in five years time, as few sales people seem to stay with the same firm for very long, but their employer had certainly better care, and at least try to pass that ethos down to his staff.
But maybe that is the way with some firms. Short-termism is a very popular business model, as we've seen with the banking crisis - solely brought about by caring only about the next set of accounts and the next bonus, rather than the long-term viability of the company.
