seen mid 90`s old shape pajero / shoguns fetching £3k-£4k on ebay , and an M plater at our local garage asking £3200 so prices still good on some 4x4`s.

would have thought lpg conversion explorer worth far more than that

Greetings,

Please tell me why everyone says "you lose VAT"

Vat is charged when a sale is made surely, whether or not it is new or second hand, therefore, the buyer of the van that is traded in has to pay VAT and therefore to talk about losing VAT is a red herring put about by the trade to make you think they are your Fairy Godparents.

Dont think so.

When you buy a new van the dealers charge you a price for the van plus VAT.When you trade it in you just get a price for the van so you have "lost the VAT",ie you had to pay it in the first instance but can't charge it back nor is it included in the valuation at trade in. Its not a term for dealers fiddling the figures to do you a favour.

With regard to 4x4 prices Discoveries round these parts are selling like hot cakes.I changed mine about 6 months ago,got £1500 for a 97Tdi with 120k on the clock (private) and paid £6900 for a 53td5 with 58k (dealer). Now I could get at least £2500 for my old one and pay £9000 plus for mine at our local auction. What credit crunch?

We must be very lucky. Our little van has actually risen in trade in value over the past 8 weeks. The traders i've talked have said the same thing, our wee 'pocket money' van is like hens teeth to traders to get hold of. It's lowest value that any of them'll offer has risen by £500 ...This certainly helps us especially as we've seen the van that we're going to p/x too. Just waiting for the dealer to come out later on this week.

My photos allow you to see what I saw at the time that I took it....No messing.

It certainly pays to ring around.  When we bought our present van - Bailey Bordeaux we traded a 5 year old Eldiss 2 berth (Broad Lane Special |Ed) Lowest trade offer was £4350 + no discount on new van,  Next best was £4800, then £5250 - we finally got £7000 plus £600 discount on the new van and a free mover and radio swapover.  We're just waiting for our next van and have gone back to the same dealer (Chichester caravans) who again was the best deal.
