dont take the battery out if you forget to put it back in and any thing happens the insurance company would not pay out, I think b and q are selling ones that are toast resistant or something like that. also I had one that went off at the slightest thing, my mrs could burn salad and it would still go off.......................

Since when did an insurance company want a smoke alarm fitted.
I have never heard of this.

we have smoke alarms that were fitted by the Fire Brigade and they still go off at the slightest thing and one of ours is fitted at the bottom of the staircase so its in a different room than the kitchen and theres not a thing you can do about it going off apart from taking the battery out. If you put the battery where you cant miss it you wont forget to put it back. I asked our insurance comp if we had to have one in the caravan and was told it's not mandatory but we still have one fitted , we just take the batt out and put it back when we 've finished cooking. if you put it next to your mobile phone you wont forget . simple

Remember, a smoke alarm could very well save your life if there's a smouldering fire - being sensitive to cooking is annoying, but being dead is worse.

You can get smoke alarms that can be overidden by a simple push button, the alarm resets itself after a time delay.
Can be purchased in DIY Stores etc.

We have looked and the only ones we can find are those where the re-set only lasts about 1 minute before it goes off again. It would be nice if you could adjust the re-set for say 15 minutes. As you are present while cooking it should not make any difference.

I think that this may be the answer and the price is right.
I should have clarified. We got sick to death of resetting it that I slung it. Now, I have a new one with a velcro strip which when we are in the van during the day, lives in the awning, then at night, instead of putting the cat out, we bring the smoke alarm in!

It works.
like the velcro idea.
------------- the only silly question is the one you do not ask.
I just dare not install one. The owd dog nearly has a heart attack if the one in my house goes off, she won't come back in the house for hours - never mind an ear-piercing one at such close quarters.
I think I will just have to stick to sensible measures, such as turning off everything at night. That's if I ever get the damp sorted out, at the moment I think a fire would have a hard job to get going, so it's not a priority.
I had fire angels in my last house and they were a very expensive waste of time... going off all the time.
I don't know why caravan manufacturers install smoke alarms on vertical surfaces when they should be mounted horizontally, unless they have a different type of detector inside them? Smoke alarms should also be vacuumed clean now and again to remove dust, etc.
I think the one in our van has a mute facility to use whilst cooking, etc,and then resets itself after approx 30 mins.

Our caravan does not have any horizontal surfaces capable of mounting a fire alarm on.
Then again, as we do not have one, that is not a problem for us!
