I'm all for freedom of choice and certainly don't want more legislation brought in my this nanny government. I'm more than happy with my poor mans zafira with standard tyres thank you very much.

congrats on your liberal ethics. I wouldn't dream of using this forum for my plan to enforce germanism's onto the British roads

My point about how the rest of europe laughs at us Brits when our country goes into chaos because of a bit of snow still stands.

not for use as winter tyres but would get you out of trouble if you were stuck.

I don't think its a matter of personal choice. Those who want to use winter tyres will always be prevented from driving by those in cars with summer tyres, stuck with wheels spinning, causing traffic jams or sliding into things causing accidents. You see abandoned cars hampering snow clearing.

There is also the improved grip below 7 deg C to consider. I'd rather use winter tyres than have yet more speed cameras to cut the accident rate.

The government is committed to reducing the accident rate yet winter tyres get no mention at all. Very few people seem even to know anything about them or where to get them from or what they do..

Here's another alternative - SNOW SOCKS!

Oh, and here's a news story about Germans, French and Danes wetting themselves with laughter at just how rubbish the British are in the snow... LINK

Considering we've only had a little bit of snow I fail to see why we all need to panic & rush out buying winter tyres. I didn't measure the depth of snow here but I guess it wasn't more than 4" in the side roads at most. Once out on the main off estate roads we had no problems. Seeing how some of the idiots were driving in that, a change of tyres wouldn't do much for them I'm afraid. Pampers for the passengers might have been a good idea.

The snow socks are a bit like covering your hillwalking boots with socks to cope with wet and slippery rock on scrambles ( at least in the days when boots were less grippy than now ).

Why don't we Brits choose not to make journeys that arn't absolutely imperative or life and death.
If you don't drive in conditions where people regularly get stuck on B roads and snowed in on motorways because they havn't got the sense to stay at home you wouldn't be discussing snow chains, 4x4's and snow tyres.
Why not do the sensible thing and leave the snowy roads for drivers whose jobs are dealing with emergencies and urgent deliveries etc such as nurses, police and ambulance. They need to get through and can't if other people block the roads!

We only have conditions such as these once every 30 years, so don't go out and buy 4x4's or snow tyres for the sake of a week of snow every 30 years!

I think you've been retired for too long Jeeps, in the real world, people have to go to work & earn a living, many don't get paid if they don't go to work, unlike coppers. Its ok in this sort of weather to batten down the hatches & stay in when you don't have to go out. Then you can just sit & watch the telly. Do that & you might believe the whole country is at a standstill & the food shops are empty, which isn't actually true.

The reality is most people have only been making essential journeys, to get to work to earn money to pay their mortgages.

I don't think there's enough of the country with enough snow to warrant winter tyre or the purchase of a 4x4. Folk who live in areas with serious problems are geared up with the right kit to get about & the way of it all to use it. A 4x4 dealer my brother was talking to last week told him they've sold an amazing amount of vehicles during the bad weather. All their used stock except one loaned to the local NHS was gone.

I was given a lift the othe day in a vehicle driven by a man with many years driving under his belt. The way he was handling his vehicle with ordinary tyres on was bad enough, give him winter tyres or a 4x4 & I'm convinced he'd believe he could forget the road conditions & drive normally. I've never been so relieved to get out of a car in my life. Surely, most of us are only suffering bad conditions on estate roads & allowing more time for journeys should sort the job out without resortibg to having different sets of tyres hanging around.

When was the last time there was a serious "snow event" in Britain? February 2009! The current conditions may be the worst for 30 years (or more) but they don't only happen every 30 years. In some parts of the country they happen every year, although it's unusual for them to last so long.

The biggest problem industry faces with the snow is the lazy ****s who decide they won't go to work because they have seen some snow. My kids school shut on the Monday before Christmas because of bad whether, shut again the following morning, but opened in the afternoon to take the kids to a pantomime some 15 miles away. You cannot seriously tell me that was not down to the teachers wanting some time off to do their christmas shopping, but they couldn't bear the thought of missing the opportunity to go to see a pantomime for free!

I travel 15 miles to work and have never yet had a "snow day" yet I know many people who think they are entitled to have 5 "snow days" a year. Yes I do drive a 4x4, but only for the last year, previously, I had a rear wheel drive saloon car; the worst possible combination for snow and ice.

The only way around this is for employers to toughen up on work-shy staff who won't go to work.

Sometimes it depends where about in the country you are........where you're coming from.....and where you have to go to.  And advice being given was  'if your journey isn't necessary....don't drive'.

I have been snowed up in Wick, stuck on the Black Mount in Glencoe (thought I was going to freeze to death) and had the car buried in snow above Harthill in  the1960's and it was 3 days before I could get to it to dig it out.....sorry, but you can't just judge the rest of the country by your local conditions at any particular time.

I'm sorry, but the country has come to a standstill. Schools closed, exams cancelled, hospital appointments missed or cancelled, panic buying in the shops, offices and factories empty, all buses cancelled, bins not being emptied. This is OK for one day but it's now been a week with more snow on the way.

It is necessary for all to be suitably equipped as those not equipped will hold everyone else up. At the moment, the only solution for anyone can think of is a 4x4, but they are not perfect. They only work better than cars when pulling away or going up hills. They are just as bad at braking and steering.

Winter tyres are a simple, economic solution. Put them on in December, take them off end of Feb.

The problem in this country Isn't so much that it comes to a standstill but the fact that the ridiculous British media love talking about the weather,, 2" of snow and they love putting the news loop feed on 24/7...It's lazy journalism. I turn the radio on every night and listen to 5 live and for the last 7-10 days I kid you not most of the talk Is about the low temperatures or the fact that we have snow on the ground. I'll be listening to my mp3 player tonight.

I have managed perfectly well without a 4 wheel drive in the past. The important thing is to drive for the conditions. For an entire country to grind to a halt due to 2 inches of snow is frankly embarassing and shows why employers would sooner employ Eastern European workers. There is a significant portion of the British population who won't get out of bed if they see so much as a flake of dandruff on the windowsill. Could you imagine what would happen if the Skandanavians, Russians, Canadians etc took this attitude?

We had a driver in work who wouldn't travel to work in the snow in case he had an accident...This is someone who is supposed to be a professional driver states he cannot drive safely in the British weather.

There was someone on the radio last week complaining because her son was expected to go to work and he was too scared to drive because he hadn't driven in snow before. Come on there's a first time for everything and just because he has passed his test doesn't mean he cannot take a few more lessons in the snow. Shouldn't be difficult to book some lessons either as most learner drivers will be cancelling due to the weather (lighting another time bomb for themselves)
