If you're on your own & therefore can't leave anyone with your unit, some service areas have parking near grassed areas where you could walk your dog & still keep an eye on your van. Michaelwood is one which has parking near the area folk tend to walk their dogs on both sides. There must be others.
You'll never be far from other people in a service area, there's always other caravanners or even a few of us lorry drivers (lots of us caravan too) around if you need to leave sight of your unit for a short while, ask someone if they'd mind keeping an eye on it for you for a few minutes. I take breaks regulalry in service areas & I wouldn't object ot watching someones caravan for an agreed length of time..
We carry two Kayaks on our car as well as tow the caravan & we always make sure an adult is with it at all times. I don't want some clever idiot messing with the straps on the kayaks or the caravan.
We leave ours unattended if going for something to eat with it hitchlocked to the car & alarm/tracker armed. we do try to park where we can see it from the restaurant window if possible though. Also see plenty of other left unattended too without security, so in my opinion if the thieving scumbags are about they are more likely to go for one of the easier targets.
We try not to ever use motorway services.Overpriced fuel and overpriced stale food just doesnt do it for me.We try and plan our journeys where we pull off the m/way and refuel at garages near the m/way.Many garages now have toilets and hot food and drink and usually only a third of the price of a m/way services.

Pretty new to caravanning, is it OK to travel with the chemicals in the loo then? I thought that this wasn't recommended or do you have to take certain precautions?
We travel with just a small amount of chemical and a small amount of flush water just for journey use, we never leave the unit unattended at all. Pull off the motorway find somewhere to have a brew and food and then resume our journey, after many years we have quite a few OK places to stop, and some that we do not go to again

We put the chemicals in and add a bit of flush water and its ready for use.

i put chemicals in without adding water this keeps it smelling fresh until we get to the site.

That's great ... but I wouldn't like to rely on them to be open or, if they are, accessible with a van on the back. If you have personal experience of a good garage that's different of course, but I could imagine a lot of driving about if you're doing it "blind".
And most garages aren't set for providing parking areas for that vital half hour's kip!

I've never been able to find a web guide to garages which tells you whether they have suitable access for caravans. If you have one, please share it with the group!

We never leave our van unattended..... but then that is easy with two adults and an older teenager..... If another caravaner was on their own and asked us to watch their van of course we would..... but us Brits never do do we??? ask that is????
