We have a Tom Tom & a Navman and the Tom Tom is much better.  Never quite trust the Navman - tends to get you almost, but not quite there...

Hi Zipster, Have the Garmin Nuvi 765T lane assist, lifetime traffic updates, bought the lifetime map updates, map update at start of this week and new road opened 1year ago still not on it,when turning left or right warning distance depending on your speed,it tells you the street names, distance is given eg:- in 0.3miles turn left or right, onto a street name, you have to keep looking at screan to see the highlited route  when in city or town with little distance between street turns, occasionaly been almost by a turning, when it tells you to turn, have also mist a few turnings, master reset needed,(loss favourites data), had the tom tom GO,maps ok but street names wrong in quite a few areas, the garmin I have is far better than the tom tom, though not for caravans (garmin truck nav?) keeps me off roads unsuitable for caravans, costs more than your £100- £200 realy depends what your looking for,if possable try before you by

I have owned my TomTom One XL for over two years (maybe three) and it's been great.  I find that if I plug it into my computer every now and then, it works better because it updates itself as to the position of all satellites for the upcoming week(s).  I'm not sure about the accuracy of TomTom's mapping in your area, but the Canada - USA mapping in mine always seems to be quite accurate.

My unit is a Denso that's integrated within the vehicle so in 5.5 years its never had an internet update as far as I know.
It has no user computer interface and that's a pity as being able to inject previously prepared routes from my laptop would be a big plus to me. That is a feature I would look seriously into if selecting a portable unit; the quality of its off unit mapping, routing etc.

The one thing that we have bought that is great is a patch antenna.  Because it sits on the roof of the car it has an uninterupted view of the whole sky.  Because of this it picks up the satellites quicker, especially in non perfect reception areas.

TomTom offers a free update called QuickGPSfix.  Here is a description of it from their website:

"Your TomTom device uses the signals of at least 4 satellites to to pinpoint your location. To start navigating, it needs to know exactly where each satellite is. Stop waiting! Start navigating faster with TomTom QuickGPSfix™.
This smart service speeds up the time it takes to fix your GPS position, helping you to get a GPS signal within 30 seconds - even when it's is weak or partially blocked."

I find that it does speed up the time to locate it's current position.

Maps will be wrong on all sat navs in some areas, but so will paper maps. Its still a lot easier driving on your own with a sat nav rather than trying to follow a paper map.

Newer sat navs have much better GPS systems which work with a much weaker signal than before, so whereas a car with an athermic windscreen would cause problems and require an external antenna for older sat navs, modern ones will be fine. Mine even works in the glovebox.

The Tomtom QuickfixGPS does help get a quicker fix, its vitually instant when its found 3 satellites. You need to update it every Sunday.

Not always so,  I had a Tomtom 730 which died at Christmas and replaced it with a Tomtom XL Classic which does not have the facility to take a antenna because Tomtom say that it no longer requires it due to technology advances, well they do, I used it for two weeks when ever you turned it on it would take as long as 15 to 20 minutes to find a satelite even if turned off for a couple of minutes. It is now back in its box and I bouught a refurbished 730 direct from Tomtom so I can plug in the antenna again and no problems.

Newer technology is not always better.

Some cars namely French have coated screens and block signals so can be a problem. Have had Tom Tom, Then Garmin Nuvi 250 with traffic update.Good unit but speaker has died after 18 months. Have bought new Tom Tom one XL with IQ routes and traffic antena and am very happy with it. The other thing with Tom Tom is you can plan akward routes using Itinery planning which is not available on Garmin and it now has coordinate planning too. Used Sat Navs for 6 years now and will stick with Tom Tom from now on until new european system in 2011/2012 which they claim will be the bees knees.

Al I can say is I have a French car, Peugeot 406 with athermic windscreen. The Navman 635 I used to have would only work in the little gap of non athermic screen by the mirror. The tomtom 520 with Sirf 3 chipset works anywhere in the car, even in the centre console in front of the gear lever.

IQ routes are absolutely brilliant at picking routes you would actually drive as a local. Not sure if Garmin have a similar system.

Hi, just a comment about satnavs, i have a tom tom supplied by work for my job and i own a "myguide" one day i put the two of them on and prog them to the same destination, the tom froze on a number of occasions the cheap one didnt and when i check distance to destination the cheap one showed 10 miles less and took me a diferent route, i treid the reverse when i was coming home and the cheap one brought me back the same way the tom showed 15 miles longer and took ten mins to lock to satalite the myguide took 10 secs and didn't freeze at all on the journey back the tom did three times.so i would go for the cheap one every time, hope this helps a bit

cheers

Are you sure as my understanding, such as it is, is that the whole concept works on the satellites being geostationary? So that ought to have no influence on the choice of receiver to buy.:::

The satelites are geostationary. If they weren't then everyone would be moving their satelite dishes around at home.
It is more like having tv in a caravan, because you have relocated, then you need to re orientate and find the signals again. Perhaps this quickfix gps helps to do this quicker.
My tom tom is great, but does sometimes take a couple of minutes to locate itself even in an area that it usually sorts itself out instantly. Overall would reccomend, as it's so easy to use

The satellites are not geostationary.  They orbit the earth twice a day in precise orbits.

Geostationary satellites orbit the earth, but at the same speed as the earth rotation, so do appear to be stationary in a fixed point above the earth. This is the type of satelite which is used for gps
