We used an adapter briefly, when we had a new car which we chose to have with a 13pin socket for forward planning - whereas our existing van had the twin plugs. 

I would have to say that the adapter cable when connected, tended to leave a lot of flex 'hanging down' and nearly touching the road - so was not ideal.  We decided to get the van's plugs changed over to a single 13 pin.

That wrap-around flexi cable tidy stuff (like you use on TV/Computer cables) does help to neaten the appearance and prevent scuffing of caravan cables.

I can see a reason for not changing to a 13 pin socket - unless the only thing you use your towbar for is to tow your own caravan, then virtually everything else you go to hook up to will have a 7 pin plug as i have found out. I agree that the adapter is far from an ideal solution but sometimes its a necessary evil.

As I sometimes tow a trailer with the old type wiring on it, wouldn't it be possible to run wires from the current two sockets across to a 13 pin socket? I've got an adaptor for towing the caravan but I'd prefer the socket to be on the towbar properly.

We bought our adaptor from Attwoolls for a lot less than the prices I've seen them in dealers shops.
