That reminds me, my supervisor at work (and friend) bought everyone a mug that was personal to them. Mine said "I'd rather be caravanning" so of course i use it at work because i WOULD rather be caravanning than working! Nobody else made much comment about my wonderful mug or the mug they'd been given, but i was over the moon with mine!

So what's the big deal with Thailand?

Is It true its called Thighland because you have to rub thighs with strangers for hours on end on a plane to get there?

Plenty of bars in Phuket where you can rub thighs with stangers after you've got of the plane Wendy

Our friends think we're mad and so does one of our sons...when the kids were growing up we always went camping with our lovely frame tent, now one of our boys uses the same tent with his young family and we have the caravan.  These people who go abroad all the time and stay in hotels/apartments whatever dont know what they are missing.. they think all of us are mad, well let them, if they all caught on to what we have there wouldnt be enough room for us to enjoy our time away.

caravanning is not just a holiday and thats the secret to it.its a  hobby as well.theres something satisfying about getting prepared for a trip, upgrading your caravan to how you want it, getting your outfit polished up ready for the trip, the actual drive to where your going to particularly on a lovely warm sunny day, then you meet and talk to other people with the same interests.its a hobby, adventure, holiday, sight seeing , relaxing  thing all rolled into 1 package ....if you get my drift ???

Quite agree, camping - whether under canvas or under a tin roof - has always been the same, friendly people, relaxing and  an adventure.  First trip in our new to us van 26 March Shaftesbury

And of course you are in no way restricted to this country. Really we don't want to persuade the club 18-30 / disco brigade to do anything other than take themselves off to Spain etc.

Travelling the world is fine - been there - but it's costly, an unpleasent journey if flying (made worse by security issues these days), and you can frankly get enough of it. In truth I'm not really bothered what anybody else thinks as we do what we do for us not them! However quite a few are aware of the green credentials of caravan holidays and that shuts up the most ardent critic

Our friends always go abroad too and don't seem to think that we have "proper" holidays because we stay in the uk in the 'van.

I personally wouldn't swap my umpteen weekends and few full weeks away in our van for their fortnight in some sweltering Greek appartment.

I agree!!

Ahh yes the joys of our different ways of holidaying......

Some of us like.........Open roads...where does all of the traffic go once you have a caravan? Without the van I always end up behind a lorry and can't see the road ahead, but not when towing. Odd that.

Peaceful countryside. Hills to walk. Country Pubs. Sipping wine just watching to sun go down over Kinder Scout....No noise.....cobblestone market squares.....long peaceful walks.......your own space

While others enjoy.....Airport hold ups.....airline strikes (bet there's one at Easter), delays....Potential Terrorist activity..........injections .... earthquakes...queues..."Sorry sir we've double booked would you mind sharing?"

each to their own I say

Phil

Hi,

We have only been caravanning for 3 years since oh retired, I just wish we had done it years ago. We used to fly to various hot countries which we enjoyed, but never came back feeling fulfilled, now we go away when we feel like it to wherever we want, uk and abroad feeling so refreshed, happy and excited when we get back. We are then planning and looking forward to our next expedition within our budget which is more achievable when you camp or caravan, you can make it as cheap or as expensive as you like. We have friends who do caravan and the ones which don't think we are mad, but we manage to go away more than they do, we meet so many nice, friendly people and enjoying our retirement so much more than they are.

We love it.

Marilyn

Hi

We have been on european holidays for about 15 yr upto 2 yrs ago. We had just come back from the Venetian Riviera, and on a whim booked a quick week away in Silloth North Cumbria. Not the best of places possibly but cheap and in a static caravan.

Whwn asking my daughter which holiday she prefered it was Silloth and because, she could ride her bike and play on the climbing frame etc.. The weather and beautiful surrounding of Italy did not even get a vote.

Two weeks later we bought a tourer and in the last 18months have not looked back, we should have done it years ago. Admitedly the sun shines more on the MED, but hey getting wet is all  part of a Britsh Holiday, and to make things even better in 18 months of caravanning summer and winter in total of 65 nights to date we have not been rained on once, abit grey and over cast but definitely not rain. So can't be all bad.

Just looking forward to this year and the many weeks and weekends away its gving us for not much cost.

Chris W

I am 29 years old and have been married for 4 years. We have travelled all over the place including Thailand twice, last year we had a little girl which changed our perspective on holidays. Since then we decided we would try to spend as much time as possible as a family so in October we took the plunge and bought an Abbey Vogue 2007 540 model.

We have not looked back since, we have booked a weekend every month till December and a fortnight to Cornwall In July. I have got the caravan bug good and proper so much so that my brother is getting married in the U.S. in May and i am his best man, well i have changed the flights so that i dont use as much holiday.

Every holiday day i get this year will be spent in the van.

People at work don't know what they are missing but i am glad at least i won't have to queue to shower at Clumber Park on a cold February weekend.
