 Hiya , when i was in the army and stationed i germany in the '70's anyone with a righthand drive car had to have the headlamps changed as it was illegal to drive on beam deflectors unless you were on holiday and the same went when we drove back to the uk on leave, as long as we were on holiday we could use deflectors but as was said earlier the brit police dont bother to check foreign cars as its too much hassle with the language barriers . atb Bill

Sheffield ehh? Sound!

Yup that makes sense re not driving on them all the time, I recall in the 70's the deflectors were not the best and despite having them on and fitted properly you'd still get flashed.

and this from 'Code de la route'..

Article R416-6

   a) Au moment où il s'apprête à croiser un autre véhicule ;
   b) Lorsqu'il suit un autre véhicule à faible distance, sauf lors d'une manoeuvre de dépassement ;
   2º Quand le véhicule circule en agglomération sur une route suffisamment éclairée et hors agglomération sur une route éclairée en continu dès lors que cet éclairage est tel qu'il permet au conducteur de voir distinctement à une distance suffisante ;

Basically it is an offence punishable by fine to contravene the rules stated, one of which is not dipping main beam and thus dazzling the on-coming driver.  My reading of this will no doubt be questioned.

As far as I can determine a Category 4 fine is up to €750 - approx 10 times the price of fitting benders or adjusting your lights.  Seems a lot to me though.

Why learn French when we have Google translate?....

Beam.

I. - Mopeds and light quadricycles motor must move with their lights or lighted intersection.

II. - Other vehicles must travel with their lights on or passing on, with the exception of beam:

1 When the vehicle is likely to dazzle other road users:

a) When he is about to pass another vehicle;

b) When following another vehicle at close range, except during a passing maneuver;

2 When the vehicle is in town on a road sufficiently informed and out of towns on a road lit continuously when the lighting is such that it allows the driver to see clearly at a distance;

3 When visibility is reduced due to weather conditions. However, in urban areas, even in rainy weather, this provision does not apply to motor vehicles other than motorcycles that move with at least their side lights on when the roadway is sufficiently informed and that this light allows the driver to see clearly at a sufficient distance.

III. - The substitution of the low beam headlamps must be done sufficiently in advance so as not to impede the progress of other users.

IV. - When used for high beam, low beam can be used simultaneously.

V. - The fact that any driver to violate the provisions of this section is liable to a fine for violations of the fourth class.

Did an MOT on a spanish registered LHD freelander today. One of the things I failed it on was the fact that its headlights kicked up to the right, not the left as per UK regs.So what happened to the theory about continental vehicles having a flat beam.

Are you going to let it thru on beambenders? Or have things been tightened now? Last time I got an old German lhd VW camper mot'ed it got thru with benders & a kph speedo. All I had to do was put a rear foglight on't UK o/s. rhd square headlamps for 80s T25s are v expensive now so one has to hope they can still be got thru with benders.

I guess you can get rhd Freelander headlamps from the scrappies tho, cheap enough.

Yes as long as the beam pattern is correct at the time of test it passes. people very often use black tape on the glass to obscure the cut off which gives it a flat beam, this is  acceptable even though it will probably fall off when it gets warm.

Oh and forgot, you neednt have worried about your kph speedo. you dont need one for an mot, nor lights for that matter. If you present your vehicle for test with your lights taped over and tell the tester that you only use it during the hours of daylight, it must pass. Mind you the police will still do you for it.
