Luckily the wife cannot remember where everything goes she has learnt that its the one and only time she has to be quiet and do as she is told.

We always take the panels out,it make it much easier to pull through but don't zip them back on the inside of the poles it is very frustrating. It also makes it easier to dry the awning at home if you have to take it down when wet.

When I first got awnings I assembled against wall in garden to sort everything out. numbered and coded all poles so when on site can quickly sort out left, right, middle etc. and which ends go together.

With full awning do what others have said, sort poles out, put on skirt, have all panels out and it is a 2 person job to put up. Start with center pole and lh front, then lh side, repeat on right. Add 2 middle struts, Zip side panels in before tensioning or pegging out or you could have difficulty fitting. Use one of the zismos to aid one person tensioning as has problem doing on own, needed extra hand.

With porch awning I thread on awning rail complete, build frame without crossbars and set low, get OH to lift awning material, "walk" frame under awning, increase hight, tension, add cross bars and peg down.

Left out all the "interesting" converstation items with OH during assembly, you will soon get the hang of that bit yourself

I haven't used my caravan or awning yet, I was wondering which would be the best method... Still not sure. I have a movelite driveaway awning which fits over the back of the van, I just hope it's high enough. No longer need to driveaway, it being a little caravan, but the awning used to fit my liddle camper ok. Gues it's just going to be a case of try it and see! Unfortunately, where the van is parked, I can't try it at home first to save embarrassment when I get to a site! LOL!!

We had one of those it was easy to fit but they don't work on all vans (too high or too low) you will just have to try it. The easiest with that (apart form getting OH to do it) is to first feed the poles in, then thread it through the rail whole, then one of you goes underneath (me actually!) and raises it while OH stretches/tensions it, then peg it.

We were once on a site near Minehead, and about to go out,  when a family arrived and started to erect their awning which was obviously brand new. Mother had the instructions in her hand, jabbering away in a foreign language and waving her arms about. At this point we left, upon returning some 90min later the husband had procured a  hacksaw  and was furiously sawing the poles in an attempt to make them fit.

We put the awning up as others have said, without panels, but only peg the guys out, to stop the roof taking of in any wind, and either end of the awning. Then we fit the panels, starting at one end, and start pegging, corners first, so as to get the panels tight and the whole thing square to the van, then tension the roof and retension the guys.

Has anyone noticed that a breeze, or worse, always seems to spring up when you are putting up or taking down an awning.

        Pete.

Hiya,

we have lightweight awnings which are easy to put up, 1 is a 3/4 size and the other a porch.

DH knows its best just to keep out the way, fetch hammers, fetch pegs and hold a guyline when told to!  He is in a chair so cant put the awning up I do it on my own pretty much with a toddler in a backpack yelling instructions in my ear.

I lay the ground sheet out, assemble all the poles and lay in roughly the right places, temporarily whack in pegs for the main guys, unroll the fabric, DH feeds it and i pull into place. poles threaded into channels, poles bent into holes starting one end then the other and then the middle ones, roughly peg guys to stand it up, end poles in and then adjust the guys into final position. Peg down securely outside then inside, DH has been round by now and dropped a peg at each spot.

The whole process takes us about 20 minutes from start to finish, ok not the quickest but im doing my best.

good luck to all.

I bought these two packs from Homebase (about £3 each). They are BRILLIANT for colour coding each end of your awning poles. My poles go together in about 2 minutes now!

Sorry - got no idea why that didn't work! Anyway, there are two sets of various coloured insulating/electrical tape at Homebase. About £3 per pack and WELL worth it!

I follow SWMBO's instructions to the letter. The object of the excersise is not to erect an awning but to pacify ones darling nest of vipers! After all any other approach will mean its all your fault as you are in the wrong.
