Personally I wouldn't have steel poles given. We once had an awning with steel poles and the weight was ridiculous! Given the damage they can do to the side of your van if/when you drop one, their too much of a liability. Itmight just be the way I handle awnings, but I reckon there's much more chance of an accident dropping a pole against the side of the van, than there is of the awning getting damaged in a storm.
Besides, I'd rather pay for a new awning pole than repair the side of my van.
We use fibreglass poles, and even after pitching on the Cornish coast and on Scottish lochs, sometimes in the scariest UK storms, nothing broke.
You any idea how much those steel poles weigh? Ugh!
