We occasionally get the same thing and we have used Thetford top tank fluid. I think I'm going to use plain water for a time to see if it makes much difference.

a word of warning on this,we once forgot the additives on one trip and like you thought it was ok to use just clean water.after a few days the toilet bowl started to discolour and i had to make a trip out to buy some bottles of fluid.

I cant remember what the tank cleaner was, sorry! It was bought specially for the job, and you had to run it through and leave it a while, and then flush it all way, which was very satisfying (and a bit horrifying!) seeing all the black stuff coming away!
We changed to Elsan and had no problems, its often on special offer too. We have just bought the Onechem stuff to try.

Oh! Well that's that idea down the pan (as it were!). I think I'll finish up the thetford and then try a different make.
i had same problem, when used caravan for first time at easter,i know where to put the pink liquid, but where does the blue go,i have a thetford casette.
The blue goes in the bottom waste tank to help break down the waste and stop it smelling nasty. just pour it down the pan with the flap open into the hole if theres no filler tube like on the top tank for the pink .

Very interesting there Michael but what about the Thetford loos that connect directly into your water pump and draw the flush from the aqua roll?

they will have the same problem with the staining as no flush additive can be added.ours is only used for no.1s as we use the site toilets.a pre-spray can be bought from fenwicks.some motorhomes have the same problem.

We had a portaloo with the tent, and never had any problems with black bits forming in the top tank, although we used thetford pink stuff in that too.
Towards the end of the season we ran out of both chemicals and I didnt bother buying any for our last trip . I used to empty it daily anyway .
I used tesco's own brand of toilet duck in the bottom tank and zoflora in the flush water .never had any staining either.
when we got home I even cleaned the bottom tank out with household bleach , and it never came to any harm .
I used to always wash it all over thoroughly with thick bleach , then hose it down to rinse off after every trip.
we've had the same loo for about 5 years .
Any feedback on the "onechem" stuff. I also suffer from the black mould and currently use the Thetford Pink
Looking for a change and am due some refills to look after the top and bottom tank. A one bottle solution including the Fenwicks that has been suggested would be desirable

Hello Jonny
We used the One Chem on our last trip and found it to be fine, no problems. Im not saying its better than any other brand, Im sure if the Fenwicks one is as good as their cleaners it will be great. Elsan fluids are fine too, but I think thats two bottles again. We just liked the idea of one bottle for both jobs, as it were!
You will need to clean the tank as has been mentioned before to get rid of the black bits. We used the Thetford cleaner but it wasnt cheap and others on here have had good results with soda crystals. We found that just Milton for this wasnt enough.
The current trend is to use biological washing liquid/powder as it's safer for the environment, as many of the chemical loo additives contain formaldehyde. It's certainly cheaper - but does it work? Anyone tried it?
