Takes us ages! No matter how organised we think we are, we always seem to end up with an hour to go and loads to do. I tend to do all the packing and cleaning inside the caravan and my other half does all the outside jobs once I have finished. I watch in amazement when I see outfits gracefully leaving before 10am - how do they do it?!? Granted, they probably don't have an inquisitive and playful toddler to run around after, but still...my ambition is to one day get away at least an hour before departure time!

I think the reason that it takes so long to pack up and leave is because we are all reluctant to leave so drag our heels like children lol.  Last time we went away we got packed up and ready to go in about an hour and a half.  With a lot more organising i'm sure we'd do it a lot quicker.  A lot of the stuff could be packed away the night before but we just don't bother.  I'm sure it shouldn't really take more than an hour including taking down the awning but why rush?

It depends on what is going to happen next.  If we are going on to another site then it doesn't take so long (but still long enough).  If it is the end of the holiday and we are off home then it could take ages.  If we are going home then we empty the caravan of clothes washing and food (other than anything that has to travel in the fridge, and the caravan is cleaned and hoovered on site. (Everything else stays in the van.)  We take the caravan straight back to storeage, empty the remains of the fridge and then it's straight back home.  I hate getting back to the storeage only to have to start to empty the caravan, and to do a part 2 pack up.  Our car is big enough to take the stuff, so we do in one stage.

We will often take down the awning the day before, but it depends on the weather, largely.  When going straight home we aim to leave by midday, and usually make it for about half past midday!   I have to say, we often don't rush and if we don't have to travel too far to home we will often stay into the afternoon.

Have to say, we are lucky enough to be able to store our van in the  back garden (with some clever manoevering and a power mover!) so we dont have to actually clean the van, just pack everything away.  I can then clean it out at my leisure once we're home.   If I had to actually clean the van before we left, it would take alot longer.

Downside is, it takes a good 20 mins to get the van out of the garden, down the back lane and into the road to hitch up, much to the amusement of the neighbours.

If we're aiming to leave by noon on, say, a Sunday we have to pack up as much as possible on the Saturday. Leaving it to the morning means a mad, sweaty rush to get everything away in time. Yes, it does mean sacrificing the last full day of a holiday, but the alternative is being really rushed and stressed on leaving day.

I usually get the awning down the night before wind breaks tables etc packed away. Then it's just a case of putting a few bits in the car & folding down the caravan. If we haven't got to be off site in the morning then I generally just take my time throughout the day. As for cleaning it I've only got a lino floor so a quick sweep out & job done. Although when it is home I do unfold it & give it a proper clean in a day or two. It does take longer to pack up with this folder I've got as my old caravan was just pretty much pack & go & clean it out etc when I'm home but I don't really find it a problem.

Whats the hurry!  If we are not too too far from home we don't rush.  We've paid til 12 noon!  Hubby insists on taking the awning down the day before if its dry and looks like rain.  Think we've sussed now what can stay in cupboards for the journey so pretty much everything stays where it is til we get home.  Just a few trips with washing baskets when we get back, to unload all the clothes and bedding.

We do though have a visit from the caravan fairy the week before we go away, she does the shopping and packing and everything for all 4 of us and the dog!  (She has a special list to tick off so nothing is forgotten, I've seen it!)

Takes us exactly 1 hour from starting packing/cleaning up to hitching up. I do inside he does outside. The kids need to be out of the van either playing or in the car but I think in our case the key is to have everything in the van that we need so the only thing to unpack/pack is clothes and fresh food which makes things so much quicker. When we originally set the van up we bought everything we would need so nothing except food and clothes would be needed on trips. We also leave all the bedding in and it gets washed only after we have been away a few weekends. Dont let the packing up become a chore as it will put you off going away for short trips as this is what happened with us in the tent - it was too much like hard work!!!

How on earth do you do it?  The comments you make about what we keep permanently in the van is exactly the same as ours, and it still takes us most of the morning.  Mind you an hour of that is wash and breakfast, and another hour is spent thinking we ought to do it.

Book an extra day and use that full day to pack up then set off when ever your ready. We do that and on long journeys we tend to travel through the night.

I suppose we spend an hour discussing:

Do we want to go home today?
Do we have to go home today?
Is there anything we really need to go home for?
Has the site got availability for another couple of days?

and if all those questions get answered right we have solved the problem of packing up for at least another couple of days

If we get up at 7am we can easily be off by 9am.

First, only take a minimum, then there is less to pack on the way back.

Second, have a place for everything (if it hasn't a place, then it doesn't go), and keep things in the same place every time (this helps too with ensuring the van is always balanced).

Third, always pack the awning the night before, and have a general clean and tidy round.

If you have a really long journey, get dressed, make a drink, pack, and stop after an hour or so and have breakfast. Works a treat in France, (croissants and jam with hot chocolate), and useful in the UK to sometimes avoid the worst of the rush hour.

Now yesterday, we were up at 6am, and by 6:30am we were driving into Death Valley in a motorhome in temperatures above 30 degrees, tomorrow on to the Grand Canyon, but that's another story.

How many people can you get in the box..is there room to have breakfast?

Seriously, it takes us about three hours form getting up to leaving site, two hours if no awning.

Our van is in storage so we always try and get all the jobs done ready for the next trip out.

Thanks for the comments! Some interesting points... Being organised seems to be the key! (plus, not taking any unnecessary crap that you don't need/use). We don't use an awning so that's not a concern at present - useful to know for the future though. Most of it is motivation when it comes to packing up - getting up at 0600 and driving away at 0830 would be ideal, but I'm on HOLIDAY!!! and getting up then's just too regimental for me and would probably not impress the owners of the 'vans either side - unless I pack up in 'stealth mode'...!!
Happy camping!!!

To get clear of site?
About half an hour, including having a cuppa before we start. I my pop up!

When I get home?
About quarter of an hour to unhitch and shove the trailer into it's home.

To get everything unpacked, cleaned, sorted out, repaired, etced?
Days!

My opinion is worth exactly what you paid for it.
