Has anyone had a blowout when tyrons are fitted ?

Does the blowout cause less damage ? or is it simply better control of the van ?

We werent towing our caravan at the time, but had a blow-out last summer in the car at 70mph. Car lost control, slammed into central reservation & rolled onto roof. My two boys, aged 2 & 3, were in the back hanging upside down in their car seats. Hearing them screaming is something I'll never forget. Thankfully only injuries were to my arm as it scraped on the road. Happened so quickly, absoluteley nothing I did to try & control the car made any difference. We were very lucky.

Yes I have had two blow outs with Tyrons fitted, neither with any damage to the van.
However the Tyrons only ensure the tyre remains on the rim it would not stop any flailing damage to the van from tyre delamination.
If the tyre was to leave the rim massive damage is likely to occur, as well as massive van instability, and in that sense the Tyron helps cause less damage.

The description of events in the OP make it clear to me that this wasn't a blow out. This was a puncture that was misdiagnosed as poor loading. When you continue driving on a flat tyre, the tyre will eventually shred and disappear.

Had the driver had the good sense to investigate then the puncture would have been discovered. Instead of that, the driver opted to continue towing on a notorious stretch of road for caravan related accidents with an outfit they believed to be badly loaded.

Were the tyres old and / or badly inflated? Under the circumstances then probably.

The message here is if it doesn't feel right then it probably isn't. GET OUT AND CHECK IT!

Whilst it can be apparent that a puncture has developed its equally true that its often not apparent at all.

A slowly decaying tyre pressure increasing the drag power by say 2kW is totally unnoticeable with a 150 plus horsepower tow car, but that 2 kW heating the tyre for an hour or so can have a catastrophic effect.

But of course investigate anything hinting things are wrong.

I agree last year the OH said outfit didn't feel right when we stopped at service station we discovered car tyre had puncture and lost pressure there was a nail in it. Now we would always stop and investigate.

Earlier this year I was driving to work when the front near side tyre picked up a huge coach bolt that went straight through the tyre and left the hex head sticking out. I knew immediately, because it was like driving down a cobbled street, but surprisingly the tyre didn't deflate. If that had been a 'van tyre I doubt I would have noticed, though.

There's so much rubbish on the roads these days that punctures seem much more common than they used to be.

Not only rubbish on the roads, but roads that are rubbish!!!  ....some of our roads are in a dreadful state of repair - many of the repairs to roads since the winter seem to have been makeshift..... and all the money we pay through road tax and petrol price.  ....just don't start me on that!

I had 2 Hankooks blow out or separate occasions when less than 3 years old.

It's a long story where the manufacturer (Coachman) gave conflicting information in the spec and handbook on pressures, which are crucial.

The manufacturer replaced the tyres and the spare but it took a lot of research and leverage before they agreed to meet the cost.

We had a front tyre which was not old and in good condition just blow up, that was fun with the van on the back.

Last year a caravan tyre exploded without warning, that was also real fun upon investigation the van had been fitted with car tyres and I hadnt noticed duh!

A few years ago with a Bedford CF camper on a quite bit of road I felt a slight wobble, not much, I had just said "dont worry well check it soon"

The sodding wheel came off overtook us, easily cleared two fences and travelled a very long way into the countryside before stopping.

We were shaken but not really stirred!!

Any worrying sounds or feelings should be checked asap.

Thanks - I'm seriously thinking of getting Tyrons fitted this year.

As others have said - road condition and amount of debris only seems to be getting worse

A police officer told me after a road  accident involving a tyre blowout on a caravan you would be surprised how many tyre failures on caravans are caused by car tyres being fitted to caravans.

Hi all thanks for your replies. Yes the tyres were up to pressure and i think that my other half must have had a premenition because he had recently checked the pressure on the spare too. I think it may have been age. The van is 8 years old, we have had it one year but not sure how old the tyres are although they looked in good condition. The tyre wasn't losing pressure when we left and it was just before our stop 100 miles down the road that it happened so may have been age or a puncture. We think it picked up some debris from somewhere.

I didn't think to look at the underside for damage to pipes and florr etc, will do that now.

The spare was brand new and we have got the punctured tyre replaced now and putting that one to ensure two new tyres.

I agree about jacks too. There was a scissor jack with the van but it was rusty and useless, luckily we had one in the tool box well of the land rover that was strong enough else we'd have been stuffed.

It hasn't put me off at all, its an experience but its something we have been half expecting since we started caravanning.

I've had many blowouts over the years. On other people's trailers and caravans, I have to say.  The perils of doing it for a living, you just have to take what you're given or go out of business.

As long as you stop immediately, they rarely cause a problem.  You are only liable to lose control if the tyre comes off the rim.  That only usually happens if you don't stop quickly enough, so it's very much in your hands.  That's what Tyron bands do, but I've never had them, as I'm very aware of anything being wrong, and just stop before it gets bad.

Flailing rubber is the main problem, doesn't do much to an industrial type trailer, but can certainly hack away at the bodywork of a caravan.

I would never use a scissor jack, they just aren't stable enough.  Far better with a trolley jack, and I wouldn't leave home without it.  You might also want to check your wheelbrace.  I've just had four new tyres on the caravan, and went straight from the dealer to Wales.

When I arrived, I found that one of the tyre valves had been trapped under the wheel trim, so I had to undo the wheel bolts to sort it.  The bolts had been overtightened to the point that I couldn't get them off with my normal short bar, and I had to get the long breaker bar out to shift them.

If I hadn't had the right kit, that valve would still have been trapped.

The lesson here is not to carry on if something doesn't feel right.  That's what caused the blowout.  If something feels wrong, it needs to be looked at right away.

Jim

Please don't take offense at this. It isn't directed at you as an individual, just the large number of people who can't be bothered to pay attention to the condition of the ton or two of kenetic weaponry they are dragging down the road. Sorry folks, I am about to rant...

Sounds to me like you are exactly right. Tyres - much like supermodels and nice cheese - do go off eventually. They can last for up to about 10 years if well looked after with no load on them in a nice dark cupboard.

Fitted to a caravan, exposed to the weather & sunshine, spending large quantities of time loaded whilst stationary giving them the chance to deform? They are probably shot after four years.

8 yr old tyres isn't actually illegal. It is however stupid. For the sake of a few quid a wheel in new rubber you are risking your own saftey, your passengers safety, the safety of other road users and damaging your car/'van.

If a tyre is cracked, out of round, of unknown providence or even looks at you funny - change it. Please.

My opinion is worth exactly what you paid for it.

You say spare is 'brand new' if by that you mean unused you still need to establish its age. If you are unable to do that or you find that it is more that 4yrs old, replace it. It is possible to establish age of tyre after yr 2000 by reading code on sidewall.
