No,because the car will supply the charge,by what is called a split charge system.Look at the link I posted,it explains the electrics involved. The built in charger would only be working off 240 mains hookup anyway.Your cars alternator charges the caravans battery.Heres a link to towsure who sell ready made kits, depending on your car it may just plug in,but its very straightforward.

The charger in the caravan only tops up the battery when you are plugged into the mains, so wont benefit you when not on ehu .

When ours was flat we had to attach it to the car battery and leave it on a while with the car engine running,to give it a quick boost then charge it off a normal charger at home.
When its fully charged it lasts a weekend without any ehu .

No,the current goes direct to your caravan battery (through various fuses, meters etc) from your cars alternator. The heavier the cable used, the shorter the cable run,the better the charging.Look at towsures split charge relays,it goes some way to explain what goes on.

Ignore me, I just re read , and can see I have got the wrong end of the stick .

I missed the bit about fitting another socket ,12s. I have no idea if the charger powers the battery thru this, as we havent got a second socket either .
sorry for adding to the confusion.

towsures smart relay....

http://www.ukcampsite.co.uk/redirect.asp?redir=http://www.towsure.com/product/1828-Self-Switching_Combination_Relay

....does that make it more straightforward?I apologise for not reading your posts properly about you not having a second,grey,12s socket.Hopefully we can help you to get your head around what can be a bloody confusing subject!

If you cant get the link, heres the text in breif:

The self-switching combination relay is straightforward to fit and supplies power to the caravan's +12v, battery charging and refrigerator supplies only when the vehicles engine is running and the alternator is providing enough output. It automatically prioritises charging of the vehicle battery over all other functions, and requires no connection into the vehicle's alternator or ECU wiring

...so you see that the split-charge system supplies the charging for your caravan as 12v from the car,via the grey 12s socket....no charger needed!Much better to charge the caravan battery with your seperate, home charger before you leave then let the car trickle charge it as you travel. You can always run the car for a while on site to liven the battery,or if really keen, make a connection in your cars boot and transfer the caravan battery to the car to be charged as you drive around, then back in the caravan when you get back to site!

If theres anything thats not clear now,we will try to explain. But bear in mind that Im a bit slow sometimes!!

I think im getting there now, so I need a self-switching relay and a 12s socket (with bracket and lead). Then all I have to do is work out how to wire it in to my VW. Yes?

Have a look ar Towsure website, you will be able to work out if they have a kit specific to your car,or if you need a universal one.The kit will have all the relays, cables, wires, connectors, everything you needf and easy to follow instructions (which is rare!)
Im sorry ,I cant make the hyperlink-thing work,so you will have to google towsure, then go to "towing equipment",then to "towbar wiring kits" and look at all the sections, how to choose a ready made if theres one available and how to get a universal.
