my battery doesnt charge unless the carvan button is on.
i often forget as when i plug in the mains it makes all the 240 and 12v elecs work, but battery goes flat (and I dont ever find out until mains has been disconnected)

An odd thing happened to us about 10 days ago. Went to fetch the caravan from storage for half term and the battery had only a little life in it. We had left the 'Master' switch on the unit. Now, nothing else was on in the van (as far as I could work out) and everything has seemed to be OK since. My short term answer is to make sure the 'Master' switch is off when the van is unoccupied - we usually do, but must have just forgotten this once. I just wondered if we might have had the fridge switched the wrong way too, fot it to have suddenly drained like that. I may never find out he cause. Any suggestions?
Funny that David. That's exactly what happened to me. I had accidentally left the master switch on whilst the van was on its storage site and on my return a few weeks later, the battery was as flat as a witches ???! Can't imagine what ran it down 'cos everything was switched off except that the fitted radio does have a permanent live feed to enable the storage of pre-set stations. Maybe it was this that ran it down. It's been alright ever since............

I have no idea if I have 240v lights fitted .
I just assumed that all the lights work off the battery. we have striplights that definitely work off battery and a couple of spotlights that I'm not sure about, havent checked them tbh .We didnt use any of these lights at all this weekend
The mains lighting I was referring to is a clip on light that plugs into a socket, same principle as using a table lamp. we had one in the van and one in the awning .
Ah, so if the zig mk1 doesnt have a built in charger perhaps I just havent got a charger in the van at all then?.
I thought the zig WAS the charger, as the older van we had before, had a zig with a trickle charge.
What does the zig actually do then?
Do blown fuses look different? do they go black or something , the ones we have looked at all look okay , maybe we should just replace all of them with new ones .
The Marque 1 is:
Quote: From Zig Electronics
Three way switched and fused 12v distribution panel, including battery condition monitor and power source selector switch. These panels are designed to be installed remotely from all Zig power supplies.
Power source selector switch in this case refers to car/off/van
I'm pretty certain that you will have a power supply/charger in your van somewhere you just need to find it

Thanks runecaster the fuses dont look as if they have broken wires inside .
I have the zig control panel with switches and fuses and a voltmeter on it, and one of the black zig boxes as pictured above, but you said that the zig mark 1 doesnt have a built in charger ?
so that black box hasnt got a charger built into it ?
so it wont get anything from the ehu to stop it going flat ?
I will have to take the battery home and charge it each time?
We leave the van in storage on site , so It doesnt get charge from the car towing either as its only towed a few hundred yards from storage to pitch.
is the Marque 1 control panel you have, this is purely a 12v distribution board it does not have a charger built in.
This however:
is a charger unit, if you have this or something similar then you do have a charger. This is the bit that you should be looking at as it seems not to be working. You need to find out if you have 230v going in to it and 12v coming out of it

Right, thats the same panel, so it sounds like the charger isnt working.
next question, how do I find out if its got 230v going in and 12v coming out ? Does it make a noise or vibrate or anything when its switched on ? as far as i recall, the on off switch isnt a light up one .
And if its not working , does it have to be exactly the same charger that goes in to replace it , or can another one be used instead. reason for asking is, hubby took one out of caravan that was being scrapped. This one says CEC plug in systems on it, not zig.
If you have your own multimeter then you can check it using that or get a friendly sparky to check it for you.
There should be a fuse (about 2 amp) on the input side of it (may be inside), there should be another fuse on the output side, if you cant find it on the wires between the charger and the control panel/battery that may be inside as well
Check out the main fuse board as well if it has the dreaded Chinese MCBs then the 6amp one may be faulty - what else is fused by this MCB and does it work? (Possibility of the fridge on this circuit as well)

I still haven't understood what happened. Do you have a motor mover, Vic? Ours works even if the master switch is off. I just wonder if I might have used the mover a little more than usual in putting back the van and getting it out from storeage. I've got to book it in for a service doon, so I'm mention it then and see what they say. I wouldn't have thought it anything to do with the radio as it's the first time it's happened and it's all occured within a 4-week period. The van has been in store for longer than that before and it's been OK. I don't remember for sure if my master switch has to be down before the radio works, but I think it does. A bit of a mystery.
My older caravan has no charger in it. I recently bought a pulsemaster from Frost UK for £45.00 keeps the battery fully charger and in tip top condition. Might be worth you looking at something like that.

Debbie - when you get it fixed you'll wonder what all the doubts were about
You'd never think this is the 4th van we have had would you. I sound like total beginner.
I'm charging a landrover battery at the moment, will try this out at the weekend , check all the fuses, and if it still packs up after 2 days use will get the sparky in to look at it .
To be honest I don't really want to spend any more on the van , have spent a bomb lately on new awning ,annexe, groundsheets, aquarolls so if the charger has had it I cant justify buying a new one at the moment.
if I spend any more, I won't be able to afford the pitch fees

I was wrong, Vic. I've just been told by a caravan servicing department that leaving the master switch on can effect the battery. There is a feed to the radio and also the TV booster which can take the battery down.
Well, back from the weekend . The landrover battery worked a treat .no fuses needed changing .
We used pump and lights , even left the awning light on all night last night and the battery hasn't lost any power, the battery meter shows exactly the same as when we started.
So looks like the charger may be working okay , and the leisure battery was just kaput.
Now we seem to have a fault with the water pump.
it works okay , then will just stop. jiggle the pump about in the aquaroll and it will start to work again.
I guess this must be a loose wire inside the pump , forgot to fetch it home with me to check though.
