An alternative from Aberdeen that I'd be tempted with is A74/M74/M6 untill junction 30, then take the M61 to the end where it joins the M60, go East along M62 to junction 32A then A1M South.
I sometimes find the A1 from Newcastle to Edinburgh slow going.
That's a variation on my current route only crossing over earlier. I'm trying to avoid the east - west - east route as in my OP
But thanks for your comment

Done it twice first time A7,M6 had no problems, second time did the A68 A1M and M25 was an absolute nightmare we were lucky to get a ferry as it was sea cat and they stopped sailing at 8.30 we got stuck behind an accident on A1 also stuck on the M25 left in plenty of time too.

from here in the northwest I travel down there a lot, I always use M6, then the toll road then near to the end of the M6 decide either A14/M11/M25 (longer route) or M1/M25, the M11 gets you on the M25 further round so less chance of hold ups.
I just listen to Sally traffic on Radio2 (weekdays) and decide from there.

As a variation - try crossing over to the M1 from Stoke on Trent on the A50 via Uttoxeter and Derby that way you won't need to fork out for the Toll Road and avoid all the busy traffic as you approach the Brummy area. If Sally says the M25 is congested on your route try the M11 down to the North Circular as posted above - that takes our the M25 altogether. I saved myself a few hours on one occasion when the M25 was gridlocked. Thanks for the reply
Though there are the roadworks on the M25 at the bottom of the M11 to bear in mind - not too bad - took my van through a couple of times - narrow lanes and 50mph limit that usually flows about 40 (outside of rushhour)
