Done the cornwall trip for the last 5 years , we to stop at woods but only for an hour , we normally get to St Ives by 2/3am  in the morning .  Then park up at caravan park and sleep :)   . It has been busy the last couple of times, we are leaving a week later this year , normally the first week in august we go .   Have noticed it is very easy to get blocked in , saw it happen last year. Like i said we dont stay long we like to get away and as far south as we can before the roads get busy .

First year this year with a van for us, (van, mrs, mother and 2 dog's) Were leaving Nottingham the night before and ive spotted at least 3 stop's i could use (Strensham,Michael Wood and Tauton Dean) , i'd take everyones advice and leave as early as possible, get past Bristol before the rush :)

Also i was worried about access issue's and stuff, google map's sattelite view help's re-assure i think.

We don't stop, just go right through, probably with a brief toilet stop.

Might be an idea to use a nearby campsite rather than the services and laybys - don't forget those lorry drivers that are trying to park are probably running out of driving hours and don't actually have anywhere else to go.

We got back yesterday and on the way down last weekend tried to stop at every services from Gordano only to find no where to park. There were a couple of spaces in some of the lay byes on the A30. There are also some portaloos in most of them too.

If you mean the Camping & Caravanning Club site mentioned by robin52 I believe it closed several years ago, but if you're looking for sites in the area, try Camp Site Search.

Please note that the thread you are responding to is 9 years old. Anything said back then may no longer apply as things change over time. Sites close and others open in that sort of time-span.

Hi the trick is to plan your journey leave early say 4 am, not at weekends if you cant drive all the way get off the motorway and stay at a campsite that you have pre booked. Why cant you drive it in one stint, take several breaks. Thats what we do.

the services are noisy if you intend to rest/sleep and laybyes on the A30 are usually full& noisy , leaving you little choice other than getting off the busy roads. We use the ASDA filling station at the Cribbs causeway - just hang a left off the M5 & left at the roundabout - it is signed & 24hrs

As an alternative you could set off at different times and find a CC site for a stop over, or any caravan site near the motorway. There are many of these sites that are cheap and usually a quieter/ safer place to get a good night. And usually you carry plenty of food with you for your first few days, so not getting ripped off by services is also a bonus.

Thats what we do. Always works out cheaper and less stressful. For some reson I can't settle when in services for the night.

Hi Evieboo

We have done the journey from the Midlands to Cornwall for a number of years and have normally started early morning 5am stopped at Taunton Deane services for a cuppa, bite to eat and toilet break.

This year we are travelling down on Friday day time booked in at the Minnows Caravan Park Tiverton just off junction 27. After reading another thread on here recently.

I have done the trip down to Cornwall many times from East Yorkshire.I always do an overnight stop at Tewkesbury Caravan and Motorhome Club site which is just a mile off the M5,There is also a Morrisons Petrol station on the way back to the motorway which saves having to fill up at motorway service station prices.

We do that journey every year, we used to drive from manchester on a friday after work and stay at taunton on a CL for the night then set off saturadys morning around 8/9 am however the last time we did that we got caught in a bad accident and didnt arrive in newquay till 7 at night.

My advice would be set off after tea onFriday and drive straight through till you get to Cornwall, have the beds made up in the caravanthe kids should fall asleep on route, park on the overnight parking at your campsite lift thekids straight into bed jump in yourself......get upafter a few hours hey presto your on holiday!!!! with no nightmare traffic.

We also do this coming home if we are due to leave on Saturday we spend all day at the beach (hopefully) go to the pub for tea (no beer) back to the site wip the awning down and set off usually around 9/10pm reverse on the drive around 3/4 am steadys down. Go to bed nightmare journey avoided again

Hope this helps it works for us

I do similar except I set of on the Saturday morning at about 4am, this means I get home at about 2pm on Saturday which gives me plenty of time to put washing in and get everything cleared away.
