Sara, I'm really sorry for you, but as everyone else has told you, you had to do it. I would now try for some sort of compensation as the faults have been acknowleged.  I would also press them regarding the floor. We have 3 dogs and also take carpets out when it is wet. - believe me - dogs' feet and claws are very abrasive so any protrusions in what should be a smooth fllor will( as others have said) wear through.

Please keep us informed as to your progress.

Hi Sara

I think you hit the nail on the head earlier in your comments in how did the dealer pass the van off in their PDI ! We can all miss something but  your list is totally not acceptable.

Getting approval by Bailey for warrenty work is normal (as they have to pay the dealer to do it). However i would not want or accept any dints or dings to a new caravan large or small and your list is unacceptable for a quality caravan like yours.

I hate to say it, but in the meantime I would have a word with the local trade and standards officer (they are quite friendy) as the caravan appears to be in there language 'unfit for purpose'.

Hope you have taken pictures of the problems to show the Trading Standards Office and kept a dated copy of your complaints passed to the dealer.

Another call may do no harm direct to the customers relations department at Bailey Caravans complaining that all this should never have happened and should have been spotted by Bailey quality control and the dealers PDI and tell them the Caravan Club agrees with you!.

Fax: 0117-9636554

Hope this is of some help

Mike

It should not have left the factory with faults-says a lot for quality control?

Dealer obviuosly did not do pdi properly as you say.

Our Pegasus was very good , but we have a good dealer. We have had one or two faults which have been put right.

Currently waiting for the thicker film for the front panel to reduce denting.

So sorry to hear about your problems, you must be gutted, I agree with the others about sending it back, they're not small niggles, I'd also be very careful about stepping on the lumps under the lino, they'll push through easily.

feel so sorry for you as you are going through the same problems we did with our one and only new caravan. (pegasus)

i see you have a small dent on the front panel , you will end up with many more so best to get a front towing skirt for van.they look awful but if they stop the denting fair enough.

We saw 2 olympus models on our dealers forecourt today with a dent a piece on the front panel.

good luck in getting it sorted

Go to trading standards.

This is another example of the poor way people are treated by the caravan industry.

Sara

Sorry to hear about the issues with your new van - it should be a fantastic time, not a stressful one!

I have nothing to add to the useful advice already given - I just hope you get it sorted out to your satisfaction.  It makes my blood boil the way the customer is treated as a nuisance - they should be grovelling like mad if you have to go back with one fault, let alone a huge list.  Would they have let you have the van if £1K, or so of your money, was fake?  I think not!

You may wish to point out to your dealer and Mr Bailey that this is now on this website and every member will be following it with interest!

I really hope you have many holidays once it's all sorted out.

Sue

Indeed there does seem to be a lot of posts on this forum complaining about Baileys. With cases of split panels etc.

Is it me .. or wouldnt it just be easier if they gave Sara another van?  One without any faults?   Or is that just in a perfect world.

As a for instance if I were to buy my brand new dream van (unlikely I know!) and when it was delivered I wasnt happy with it, surely Im within my rights to refuse to accept it and demand another one?

If you buy a faulty item in a shop, they just replace it with another one. Perhaps if they had to do this with caravans, they would make more of an effort to ensure they came off the production line in perfect condition.

Hi All,

I decided to call trading standards after speaking with the dealer (as advised, thank you). Trading standards were very helpful and advised me that as we have not used the 'van, just towed it to storage, we could still reject the 'van on the grounds of it not being of satisfactory quality. My OH and I decided to go straight to the dealers after work and speak with the manager. He was very sympathetic and seemed to appreciate our bitter disappointment at the problems we are having. We made it clear what we would see as an acceptable solution and what would be unacceptable. He is going to contact Bailey and then get back to us later in the week.

I will keep you all informed.

Sara.

Yes the manager will be sympathetic now he knows you have contacted trading standards. Reject the caravan and go to a different dealer. Dont let them fob you off with a repair.

Hi Sara

Glad you took my advice and went to see the Trade and Standards office, I have delt with them before (nothing to do with caravans) and if you have a 'genuine case' they are most helpfull and your dealer will not want a visit from them.!

I am pleased you can now see that if you are polite, but firm, with dealers/salesmen you 'can' get results.

For the benifit of others new goods should be supplied in accordance with the  1968 Trade Descriptions  Act  and the clause to watch out for is that the goods you purchase should be fit for purpose.

I hope things get resolved soon Sara to your satisfaction

Mike

Hi Sara. I'm so sorry to hear about the problems you are having with your new van. I'm not a caravanner myself but I do wonder if buying a caravan is different from buying anything else. With everything I can think of that you hand over your cash for from a tin of beans upwards, you contract is with the SELLER, not the manufacturer. If it is faulty, it is then up to the seller to put it right. Never mind contacting the manufacturer to see if they will pay for the work to be done or collect it to take it back to their factory. You had a contract with the seller to hand over a perfect caravan on a certain date. They have failed to do that and it is up to them to fulfil their side of the contract. Demand a new van and demand it in time for your holiday. Do it in writing delivered personally to their managing director. If they tell you that's impossible, have with you a set of forms from the County Court, ready completed, demanding repayment of what you have paid for the van and also for any additional costs which seem reasonable, including possibly hotel accommodation for the time you should have been away. You can download the forms from the court's website.

Pete

NO YOUR NOT BEING PICKY!!!!!!!!

Sorry to hear about your new van, it's so dissapointing isn't it? We were the same, first new van, shoddy hand over, lot's of niggly problems, had to return it a couple of times, really spoils what should be a really happy time.

It's not good enough all this shoddy workmanship, and dealer 'fob offs' when spending thousands of pounds we expect more than this.

But .....they will still sell thousands upon thousands and the same will happen again and again, and most of us will put up with it because we don't know what else we can do to make it any better.

The promised call from my dealer failed to materialise today. I called but the manager was too busy to speak to me. The recorded delivery letter containing my formal rejection of the 'van went into the post tonight and will be with him in the morning. We are returning the van on Saturday and hope that we never see it again.

Sara
