But in a hotel you have to sleep in a lumpy bed thats been slept in by hundreds of other people, you have to have your meals when they serve them and eat what they offer, you are often cooped up in a small room with a view of the carpark!

I'd much rather be in our caravan where only we have used the bed, we can eat what we like when we like, and we usually have a lovely view of the countryside.

I really don't understand the attraction of hotels!

Sorry but stopping in a hotel cannot compete apart from poss cost.
You have to make a choice cost or life style.

You cant beat being out in the fresh air, doing what ever you want to do when you want to do it or not do it as the case may be.

Interesting post! BUT cost can be reduced!

We had a 4 X 4 (Nissan X Trail, great tow car) and two others before, which did about 38mpg but 28mpg towing.BUT as already said you have extra road tax, insurance, servicing and fuel costs etc etc. When I retired at Christmas we wanted to continue caravaning but reduce our costs where possible, so we ended up buying a Toyota Avensis Tourer (estate model) 2.0 TR Diesel ,which has proven to be an excellant tow car and giving much better fuel consumtion both towing and not towing.

Our road tax is MUCH cheaper, insurance is cheaper, it does 46 mpg and 37mpg towing, we stay at CC sites only if necassary, but usualy at CC CL or smaller sites. Also we shopped around 'like for like' on Caravan insurance, the CC insurance may be good, but they are not the cheapest by far! we saved over £100 shopping around with an equal 'Like for Like' insurance with another reputable  co..

So life can go on, even for pensioners!

Mike

I agree with you that for 2 people it is probably cheaper to stay in a hotel for a weekend, and easier :)

For us as a family of 5 it is certainly cheaper.

Agreed - our 2 weeks to the Vendee (from tomorrow ) is going to cost us about £1000 all-in including petrol, tolls, site fees, Eurotunnel (mostly paid for with Tesco vouchers, admittedly) and food.

Just to get to my mum's flat in Spain would be £1,200 in flights alone, before you add in car hire and food etc. The difference on this one holiday has paid for my storage and insurance for the year.

If you went for a cheap holiday package for a family of 4 for 2 weeks in the summer holiday, you're looking at a minimum of £2k, self-catering (I just did a quick search on Thomas Cook website for this time next year).

To be honest, what makes it more expensive personally, is the fact that we go away much more often. I will have had at least 35 days holiday this year and we always have more meals out and visit expensive attractions when away...

i use a artic truck converted in winter for 6mths way cost 3,000 quid for the trip. .here i have a mazda bongo and a teardrop style caravan. great for getting away to the small quiet places in uk. never use sites always find somewhere to park. move on next day .horses for courses . my whole artic outfit didnt cost the price of a new caravan. had the trailer ten years . have used caravans bought for 75 quid and had loads fun. cant see the need really for all the expense. holiday here in summer and go abroad in winter . cheaper than staying here.rethink and cut costs thats the answer. ferry to spain in winter is only just over 500quid return for my outfit. look on my profile there,s a pic there. its 10 mtr long so goes as car and caravan. another 2-2,500 quid see,s two people haveing a nice time away i winter. have fun i do ,cheers alan.

I tell everyone caravanning is dead expensive! I tell them its a grand before you've set off for the year! Then bookings a nightmare, towing is a pain and your wife will hate having to empty the Thomas Crapper! And that all vans are damp, full of spiders and mice get in the vents!

Hopefully I will have put everyone off, and then I can actually book online for CC sites!!!!

I am 15k+ down on buying the caravan and more for the kit. I could have quite a few holidays for that!

Anyway I understand that you cannot really compare its a lifestyle thing.

Money has nothing at all to do with our preference for caravanning. We are free to do exactly as we please, and don't have to run our lives according to someone else's clock.

That's not strictly true.  We can only arrive on many sites after a certain time, we then have to leave those sites by a certain time, often midday. While we're o9n the sites we have to keep to any number of rules.   We have to book our vans in for servicing at the dealer's convenience, and increasingly we are being told that our vans have to conform with this regultion, and that rule - all at our expense.

Years ago, caravnning used to free and easy - but it's not necessarily like that any more.

Then there's the weather

This may be true is some cases! But out of season, and with sites that you are regular too, you can still do want you want - with permission of the owners of course! We often stay over and turn up early. Servicing is up to you, I've done my own for the last 3 years! not cost a penny, because nothing needed doing. Granted it was new 3 years ago, but - I would of paid out £550 for nalt! Get ya local sparky and plumber to sign it off - one hour each £50.

Anyway best everyone stopped caravanning because its bed for your health!

Maybe I ought to start a new thread (?) but what's all this about needing to have servicing signed off by sparky & plumber ???  Is this the law or what - & since when ? I'm getting worried now !!!

NO don't worry old cocker! I did not say that your servicing needed signing off! Just if you actually wanted the gas and electrics signing off by a pro. Peace of mind for some. I don't do it, but - if you want to make sure your van is in tip top condition, no leaks - no sparks etc.. Get your local sparks and plumber to check and sign off. May also help if your selling!

Large caravan, gas guzzler to tow it. Pretty obvious its an expensive option.

We downsized our caravan. Superb to tow, it just follows the car. Its well equipped inside, and very comfortable. It has a smaller awning (we use a full size one now as well as a porch awning) but that is plenty big enough and easy to put up. We've had much more enjoyment out of this caravan.

We do have a 4x4 which we've just sold and are awaiting delivery of a new one. 4x4 not essential, but... Road tax on new car £125, we got 68mpg on a test drive in a new car, so should expect a decent towing figure too.

Caravanning is only as expensive as you want to make it.

My last caravan service cost £90. Cheaper than your sparky and plumber, and within warranty terms.
