I wonder if it's the first three numbers like 2 (second month) 81 is the year, just thinking that's all :)

And I would bet the other digits could be the number of that van made, say if it said 345 that could be the 345th off of the production line

Can caravans really reach classic status by age alone?

Cars and motorcycles have to be both old AND special. For example, a Vincent Blackshadow is a classic motorcyle - but a BSA Bantam isn't, because it wasn't any good when it was new.

Why should caravans be any different?

What I want to know is why don't they make ones which look this anymore ?-

A great example of a vintage 1930s caravan!

That is just lovely ! Now they all look the same - boring, & fairly ugly !

Good link Michael ! Looks to me like it was in the 80's that they really started uglying up big time. Stands to reason really, just about everything was pants in the 80's imo, big hair, shoulder pads, Maggie Thatcher.... the decade that taste forgot !

I have a 1984 ABI Debutante. I was told that they didn't start integrating the gas bottle locker into the shape of the van until 1985, so yours looks like pre 1985, like mine.

Either wasy, in the end, I rang ABI directly with the serial numbers and they very kindly gave me all the information I wanted. I also bought a copy of the original instruction booklet off them for £5.
