We use a full awning - so much easier and quicker to put up than any porch awning.

Last time out though we didn't use the awning as it was only the two of us and we actually managed without getting much clutter, we could never do it with four though and our van is 7 metres long!

we went from a frame tent to a caravan this year we have never camped without the full awaning and wouldnt  our vans only a 2 berth and espcily when you have had a bussy day its nice sometimes to leave the bed up and just live in the awning through the day.   we have a hew to us awning and the firts time up took a few minets but once it was worked out its only realy 3 top poles and we found coming from a tent were extra carfull about pegging down so when a lot of awaning were getting damedged on one outing we had with very vrey bad winds ours didnt move an inch. its like tent or traler tents put up properly and peged down well they can put up with alot more than you woudl expect. and ts great for storing stuff you dont want in your caravan all the time. as our dogs have creats to sleep in in the awaning we sleep with the caravn door open and side window aswell think its years of frame tent space we like the room. if you get the fullawaning people will happly help you the first time putting it up but if you can do a traler tent an awaning is easy ususaly takes hubby 20 minets to have it up and pegged out on his own. hope you love your caravan as much as we love ours

I found that too. Last time out in the 'van, and being on my own so not needing as much space, I used the porch awning - and what a nightmare, it took three times as long to put up, when it rained water collected on the front on the roof and it leaked over the door. Never again, it's the full awning every time now.

We always use an awning - again, used to the space from our trailer tent days.  Usually eat in the awning, rarely eat in the van.  The awning is our living space.  Use the caravan for sleeping and lounging in an evening when it gets a bit cold.

We just use a porch awning. I think if you have kids  and/or dogs the extra space is useful and ours is big enough for a small table and chairs (there's only 3 of us) if we want to eat in  it.  It also keeps boots, coats and beer out of the van! We have a Compactalite pro 250 and find it easy to put up. It is one of the lightweight ones though, I wouldnt want to sleep in it.

As Zorro said, it all depends on your own personal circumstances and the only way you're going to find out is try without.  We all joke about putting up awnings the first time (it is a bit like Krypton factor!) but once youve done it, it gets quicker each time.

When we moved from a trailer tent to a caravan, the last thing we wanted was an awning. We bought the caravan so we didn't have to be under canvas. We do occasionally use a porch awning, but usually only for stays of a week or more.

As there are so many different ones I'd have thought the ease of erection / dismantling would  vary enormously even just between all the full awnings, & then also between all the porch ones.

I can't imagine that all full awnings ones are easier than all porch awnings, or that the reverse is true either

Is it ???!

We've got a full awning that we've put up twice - nightmare - metal poles everywhere took hours - screamed at the kids cos tripped over them at everyturn.

We also have a Sunncamp half size awning - which we wouldn't be without, we have two recliners, a little table, the plastic box for shoes and a camping wardrobe that we put all our bedding an pillows in during the day it takes 15 mins to go up (same poles as a tent).  Most importantly keeps the kids bikes from view at night.  And it folds into a really small bag.

Wouldn't be without out and for what they cost you'd be mad not to get one.

We have a full awning which we use for stays longer than 3 nights in the summer because it is nice to be able to sit out in it, but on saying that it is not essential.

We have a nylong 260 porch awning with the bendy fibre glass poles. Although they are supposed to be easy to erect we find the awning easier. Also the porch flaps and is noisy if its very windy.

I think that the porch awning (the type that is the same as the full awning but smaller) would be ideal as there is not so much pegging down as with the full awning therefore less time taken up if its for a shorter stay. On saying that I wouldn't use either if I was caravanning from about October to March, or even April as I wouldn't get the benefits of being able to sit in it, just the hastle of erecting and thoroughly drying if damp when taken down.

Happy Caravanning

Happy camping

My caravan is tiny (only 9' 5" body length) and we have managed with 3 of us in there for a couple of nights with no awning.

Have to admit if we went for longer then I would use the awning though.

I have a very small porch awning that came with the van, a sun canopy and a Bradcot Portico Plus porch awning that actually covers the whole van so looks like a full awning!!
I have found the awnings no more hassle to put up than a tent and the extra space they give is great, especially with 2 young boys!

Same as Helen above. Only tiny caravan, used without awning on my own, but need the extra space when my friends come with me. I have a movelite drive-away (left over from my campervan days!) which is very easy to put up and lightweight, so apart from one trip alone, I've put it up every time. I'd love a more expensive, proper caravan type awning, but the movelite is so easy, I'm sticking with that!
