As we said previously we were not aware the damp test was separate from the service and trusted what we were being told, the caravan looked fine and we didnt know what to look for,we would have thought damp would have to be mentioned on the service report, dont worry we have learnt a painful lesson,we wont try and sell it on as unlike alot of others have got morals, even some dealers cannot be trusted,we will pay for i hpi check

You're not the only one! I did much the same thing and the seller assured me it was ready to go camping in.

After a check by a local caravan engineer, he advised me to take the owners to court! I didn't want to do that as I really wanted to keep the caravan as it was just what I wanted!

It cost £400 to replace faulty electrics, and replace corroded gas pipes, etc. If I had gone camping in it as it stood, I would have probably ended up in hospital or worse, from either being electrocuted or gassed.

More spent on stopping the water pouring in the roof!

So, just to reassure you, it can be all put right. And like I said, your not the only ones!!

Cliff .... you can see from my previous posts I bought a motorhome and naively also got caught in the damp trap .... it was absolute soaked and it was buyer beware ... so I thought I will take my time . Got it resealed to esnure it was watertight. Then trawled the net and found an ex-Autosleepers fella called Neville Jelfs in Evesham which is 61 miles from Leicester. A superb craftsman. I was quoted thousands for a repair, Neville did it for less than one thousand. I got the whole overcab bed area reboarded, reupholstered it was excellent. I have recommended Neville to two people. His office number is 01386 832777 Oaktree Services. It is a trip to Evesham but boy the van was fantastic afterwards. So try Neville and I wish you the best. PS we sold the van and decided to go back a tent but now getting the old van urge again so you never know !

Its a dreadful feeling - finding damp - especially if you first discover it when in the van during a wild wet windy holiday in Wales.  It ruins your holiday of course.  And you start to dream about damp and your dreams get more vivid and bizarre...but always about damp.  You wake up with a sinking feeling about damp, you go to bed exhausted still thinking about damp.  You fall out with your OH about damp.  You get angry with yourself about damp.  You get angry about having had your leg lifted by someone who knew they were selling you a van with damp.  How do they sleep at night?  A darned sight better than you do it seems.  You even contemplate dropping it on someone else.....but then you'd always be looking over your shoulder wouldn't you?

You finally get so angry that you make a conscious decision to get it sorted....so you dismantle around the damp area in the van....its either going to be something so drastic you've got to scrap the van....or something even you can sort out.......but sort it you will....

Jenny
