If a MH is small enough to get around in, it is too small to stay in, but if it is big enough to stay in, it is too big to drive around in. A simplistic take, but it is how we view it.
As has been stated; MH's come in to their own for touring on the continent, where is is far more MH friendly, but caravans are better for stopping in one spot and then touring around. There is also the £££££££££ consideration.
Most of it's been covered, but another thing to think about is what do you use for your day to day vehicle when not camping. Are you going to have to upgrade the car to be able to tow the caravan you want or if keeping your current car will it restrict at all the caravan you can have, or perhaps if you had the motorhome could you keep your current car but then you have two vehicles to service tax insure etc. Could you use the motorhome as your day to day vehicle and get rid of the car (I know some people do but it wouldn't suit me). Really what I'm saying is the caravan/motorhome dilemma involves thinking about the rest of the year as well as what's most suitable for camping.

Thank you so much for all advice - it is very much appreciated and will provide food for thought! We are both able bodied (at the moment!) and keen walkers although much more on the flat recently rather than walking Wainwrights!
We have two cars at present so would trade one in (or sell one) and buy a motorhome. My car is a Hyundai Matrix 1.6 which I think would easily tow a caravan.
I will let you know what I decide to do. Thanks again for your detailed and thoughtful replies.
Thing is from our point, we use our M/H all year round, not just March till October, and we don,t have to go straight home of a weekend, tis whatever suits .
------------- Keep smiling, its later than you think !
Horses for courses I guess. I have never fancied a motorhome and then I get on site abroad and Im intrigued and impressed by them. Us being a family of 4, yes we like to get out and go exploring but we also make our pitch our home, with storage units in the awning, cadac out, table and chairs plus a smattering of the kids toys and inflatables so to have to shove all that inside to go out would be a bit of nightmare. Also we would need a substantial size motorhome and I've heard of people struggling to get on to pitches and out of the site - you can't unhitch a MH and negotiate it on to the pitch. I'm always quite impressed by those who tow a smart car behind them but I imagine this also brings its own set of problems & additional cost. A small niggle which is probably just me but I don't like the idea of sitting in the passenger or driving seat for xxxx amount of miles and then having to live on the same seat for my holiday too.
At the moment for us we have found our perfect in caravanning but thats not to say we won't change our mind in the future.

Given the kerbweight it might have to be a smaller caravan. When you have seen a caravan you like check both out here www.whattowcar.com
That's the one thing we have missed most on the two outings we've had with the new caravan. When you leave the site ... it is straight home, as with the campervan/motorhome you can still tour about the last day, so you have a long weekend instead of a short one !
That aside we have really taken to the caravanning, and setting up / packing up is not much longer than the campervan... but we travel light anyway.
The thing that swayed it for us when we were considering a motorhome was the amount of space vs cost. We would have to buy a huge prohibitively expensive motorhome to gain the same amount of space that we have in our relatively cheap 2 berth caravan.
We are in the process of selling our caravan to swap to a motorhome.
One of the biggest reasons is I hate towing with a passion so when we change I will be able to go away during school hols with the children without having to rely on my Husband to tow the blooming caravan!
Also when you leave site you can stop on the way home - with a caravan we never could.
The motorhome we are swapping to has as much if not more space inside as our caravan although I must admit it is a big M/H lol!

I really hope you have thought this one out particularly as you have children. What about the days out and the visit to the shops etc. We had a large motorhome and it was the biggest (and most expensive) bad move we have ever made. Uncomfortable, cold and damned expensive to run!!!!

Where does one want to stop on the way home? Just curious.
On a long journey it is much easier to stop either overnight or for a break as there is no setting up to do.
Its easier to leave the M/H whereas with the caravan I wouldn't feel happy leaving it hitched up to the car if we had a break and went for a walk etc.

Have spent a long time thinking it through and as I will not tow it is the only option for me to go away solo. Will have push bikes though, also public transport and will tow small car when we go into Europe en mass as a family. Currently our caravan just sits doing nothing when my Husband is at work as I can't/won't tow it so can't go away in school hols unless he is off so its a no brainer for us.
Thanks for the thought though :)
All points of view are valid and this discussion has been going on for time immemorial. I was first faced with the dilemma 33 years ago prior to buying our first van. Opted for a van for the very reasons that have been put forward on this thread. Am however faced with the problem of age and illhealth and am no longer able to handle the pitching up. So, guess what, we've been round the dealers looking at motorhomes and camper vans! Not impressed with the economics of a mh as really couldn't afford 2 vehicles. Not impressed with the interior size of a cv after our Senator with just the 2 of us. Have come to the conclusion that our days of normal trips of about 3 weeks at a time, usually taking in about 4 sites, are over ! Will probably opt for a smaller type camper and confine our trips to 1or 2 nights at a time, even days out & fish & chips with a cuppa. It's going to break our hearts to see the van go but needs must. On the plus side, it'll save the storage charges. Whatever the op decides and whichever way they go, I hope they have as much pleasure over the yearsas we've had..................Mick
I'm overwhelmed with the level of response to my question.
I am going to buy a motorhome in the summer to that our camping season will continue all year round. We will go for a 4 birth coach built type because I think they are less claustrophobic than other motorhomes. Thank you everyone for your thoughts and ideas - you've helped us to make what will be a very big decision in our future camping life!
