Yep, Arcopal for me as you can also use it in microwave, and in the 20 odd years I've had it I've not had one piece break (as yet!). I keep a few odd melamine plates and bowls in the back of the cupboard for the occasions when guests descend unexpectedly.
The arcopal plates etc always wash up like new and as they are thin they stack well in the plate rack. The only problem with them is that they last so long the patterns on them start to look very retro.

Well Melamine it is then. Its interesting to note that most will not use the cups for drinking from. We are the same but you try buying a set which does not have cups in the set.

Thanks for all of your replies, I think we will try and get a decent melamine set for eating off and have some real mugs for drinking out of and see how we go.
To those of you that use crockery do you store it in the overhead cupboards when travelling - if so do you wrap it or just simply store it as usual.
I am wondering whether to buy melamine when we get our van, we have loads of spare crockery having recently changed a set but I worry about the storage
With Arcopal I put it in the plate rack in the overhead cupboard and sometimes if I expect a journey along a very rough road I might lay a tea towel over them but as they have survived me dropping them several times I would imagine that a bit of bouncing about in a cupboard is not going to cause any harm. Probably would not risk it with best bone china....

Update from me.We purchased a cheap dinner set from Wilkinsons which matched our colour scheme and have 3 of the dinner and side plates in the overhead locker rack. We used the cardboard separators that came in the box between them to stop then knocking together, very handy. The bowlsm with their cardboard separators are in a side cupboard. We also bought a pack of for glass tumblers which fit in the holes in the plate rack and of course a couple of real wine glasses and mugs. The wine glasses clip into the over fridge cupboard. We then have some plastic large glasses for daytime use. So far, no problems and the glasses and dinner set cost us less than a tenner, bargain.
Crockery for us. We do have Melamine salad serving bowls and plates and bowls etc for if the grandchildren are visiting/staying. But for us to use the crockery comes out. We have tried and tried eating from Melamine but it just doesn't seem right. Infact I ended up scraping my dinner onto a crockery plate to finish the meal and that meant more washing up to do when I should have been finishing the bottle of wine in a proper wine glass(purchased from Tesco 4 for 89p a few yrs ago)
We store the crockery in the overhead locker above the sink, for travelling I put t-towels(that stay in van) in between and put a small cushion in the front. Never had any breakages.
Glasses are kept in the drinks cabinet in holders. Again never had a breakage, well not due to travelling, just due to someone drinking a bit too much and missing the table...........
