Well we have used both and everyting works so long as you have the right regulators. we carry both as the cadac still has a campgaz connector so it is more portable. Having said that if we have a electric hook up a cylinder lasts us a year or more. we changed I think 1 campgaz cylinder in 2 years in the trailer tent and we do 4-5 weeks away per year and I cook meals too in the gas oven although use the heating on electric.

Ah yes, but we'll be using it in france, where you can't buy calor but can buy campingaz. There is a method in my madness, see......? ;-)

There always method in my madness too!

We are caravanning in France for the first time having always camped. We have never run out of gas before so you can bet your bottom dollar that we will this time!

Anyway our plan is to use camping gaz and also use propane (as back up) rather than butane. Simply for the fact that propane can be used low temperatures. (no not the temperature you can expect in France July/August! but temperatures in UK October time)

I have used 1 6kg bottle of gas in 6 years, only use gas for the oven & rarley a gas ring, use the ehu all the time for heating and cooking. I do have a lite gas bottle if anyone wants it. Just pick it up and it's yours. I picked it up on my travels one time or another.I also have a small propane as well. Screw in reg type.

The link given above is great but is a bit out of date (2006 )as it states that gas cannot be carried on Eurotunnel, which is of course not the case!

I thought this should be pointed out to anyone who hasn't used Eurotunnel before and would think gas is not allowed on the tunnel.

LPG cylinders are allowed to be carried when using the tunnel, so long as they are disconnected/isolated - though i never saw anyone check, when i was allowed to use the tunnel. it would cost the operators a lot of money if they stopped anyone going camping/caravanning/motorhome meandering from using the tunnel so i doubt it is a risk assessed decision

HOWEVER vehicles that have LPG as an alternative fuel are NOT sllowed to use the tunnel, even if the gas supply is isolated and the vehicle is being driven on petrol at the time! yet they claim it is a risk assessed decision, despite more safety systems being in place, rigid piping not flexible hoses etc

seems odd to me, but its their tunnel so they can make the rules!

French gas bottles are cheaper than UK. The 'consignee' ie cost of bottle is around 18€ but there are often special offers which reduce this to 9€ & can include a free regulator. The only regulator common to both France/UK is the screw on butane as used on French 13kg bottles.

The smaller bottles used for camping/caravanning use 20mm or 27mm clip regulators. If you can 'aquire' a bottle so much the better, I found a 'Le Cube' in a layby! French gas suppliers are Antargaz, Butagaz, Primagaz, LeClerc supermkt Clairgaz is cheaper still, google for websites.

That's great news about the 6kg bottle - perhaps I won't worry too much about my 20 month old bottle then.  We just use the gas for the cooker.

Hi

We always struggle with our noseweight so usually carry 1 x 6kg propane bottle and a half full campingaz 907 with the regulators to suit both. If we run out in france we can just buy another 907 from the supermarket.  We have a gas kettle and we're cooking for 4, everything else is powered by hook-up so we have more than enough gas for 2 -3 weeks holiday.

We used to do exactly the same thing at one time, but I don't think we ever changed a gas bottle in France.  Now we just take a couple of calor-lite bottles - 1 for the van, 1 for the cadac (only had cadac and second cylinder for about 6th months anyway and haven't used it too much).  We have had our original calor-lite for 20 months and it seems to have life left in it.  I reckon it will have gone before our 5 week summer jaunt to France though.  We only use gas for the cooker - everything else is electric.  We don't use the van as often as some - about 10 times a year - but the gas seems to last for ages.  It depends on use though.

Hi David

I've had a look at the Lite bottles, the exchange price seems similar but how do they compare with the standard ones for availability?

Hi Mrs A.  Apparently, of late Calor are having some problems, because of supply and demand, but they seem to be addressing this.  As a long term solution, I would see this as the way to go.  Bottles are lighter - they seem 'nicer bottles to handle too' - less 'rough'.  They are 49.7% lighter than the 6kg standard bottle

I think we'll look at changing to lite when the current bottle runs out, a weight saving of 4.5kg would be ideal as we have to get the noseweight to 75kg...what a faff that can be!  Thanks for mentioning these David :)

Let's hope they will have sorted out all the supply & demand issues by then.  It'll be good for the noseweight.

Best wishes
