Here, here Birder 99. We should not have a need for all of the signage as people should be aware of the fact we are in camp sites not our own homes or gardens, noise travels!!

Whatever sites set their speed limit to there will always be someone calling for a higher limit. Its a sad fact that there is always someone out there that always knows better than the rule makers and is not prepared to take any other point of view or opinion than their own.

Try working in any industry that involves customer service and I guarantee you will get sick of hearing me, me, me.

Angus 1215, did you mean Ralph Nader's book Unsafe At Any Speed?

Lanzlady and Clairehope, I've often been tempted to take a swipe at GT60's little insect!

Re the original post, yes, slow down - nobody's reactions are as quick as they think they are.

It's not really a speed limit, is it? It's a sign that you must drive very slowly - so slowly that you could stop instantly. Whether that is exactly 5mph or under 10mph isn't the point - just slow right down. Apart from anything to do with safety, it's less noisy too.

Don't normally get involved in this sort of question, but, the above sums up my thoughts on the subject perfectly!

Thats a good idea.
I watched people all last week break the limit on site time after time.
I have to say, and I know this won't go down well, Camper vans are the worst.

When we were at Chatsworth at New year I saw the warden follow two vehicles back to their pitches and made them aware they were speeding.

Of course with everything some people think it doesn't apply to them.

5mph is actually a difficult speed to maintain. Most speedos don't display speeds under 10 mph and most cars in first gear, ticking over will be doing more than 5 mph. An automatic will be doing a lot more.

Whatever you set the speed limit at, there will always be people who see it as a target, not a limit. I've been to a site in Somerset that is geared toward children and has a 20 mph speed limit. This is not enforced, on the contrary, the site in question operates a land train. For the purpose of research, I rode on the land train with a sat nave and clocked it a 35 mph. A thing that size wouldn't have a hope of stopping if a child stepped out.

Interesting ... we were at Yellowcraigs CC site this weekend.  We had a good view of the main site road, I would estimate a fair few people were doing 20mph, some towing.  On more than one occassion leaving/entering the site at 5pmh I had people sitting on my bumper.  What is the rush?

I had my wastemaster on my towball this morning and the toilet cassette strapped to it. I wasn't driving anywhere I shouldn't have been though. I wasn't at Blackmore either.

It was a very long walk uphill to the nearest elsan point and I didn't want a full toilet cassette in the car. Why else?

Do you rely on bungie straps, or do you use something more substantial?

I wouldn't fancy the consequences of a toilet cassette breaking loose and falling off. It's almost happened to me when manually pulling a Wastemaster on a bumpy/gravel road, and if you're towing it with a car the first you'd know about it was when you arrived at the emptying point.

But if you're having to use your car to take a Wastemaster and cassette to an emptying point, I don't like the sound of the campsite's facilities or layout.
