Hi greendemon, half a ton of sand jesus i would have no where to sleep. Looking back now i wish i had of made it longer at the back, as it stands there is a good to foot over the axle to the rear. As for the riding and handling i cant fault it, it is real stable on the road, brakes work fine now after i just adjusted a few nuts which undone themselves, cornering feels real good and to be honest my shogun sport rear end does not go down that much like some caravans i see on the back of cars. The 102kg I would like to get down slightly to say around 90kg! I have no intentions of towing with a smaller car and my shogun does a real good job. so if i would like to get the tow ball weight down by 10kg how much would i need to put over the rear end?

Hi Ian

A bit tricky at this stage.  I do wish you well with it, but it's definitely going to pose some problems.

I think whatever you do, you're still going to need the 4 x 4.  Certainly a smaller car would pull it, but would never stand the noseweight.

Without measurements it's hard to say, but the ratio between front and back, divided at the axle, looks to be about 10:1.  That means something over half a tonne of sand behind the axle to bring the noseweight down to car levels.

Putting that into perspective, spare wheels and sand aren't really going to help much, so I think the noseweight isn't going to change substantially.  All you can do is try to get it under 100Kg, which is the limit for some hitches.

As far as pendulum effect goes, it's actually more like a hammer, with all the weight at one end, so you will have to take care on the road.  I think if it snaps out of line, you probably won't get it back.  There's no balance. Fortunately, you have a heavy tow vehicle.

Legally, I'm not sure how you would go about getting it plated.  Hopefully, someone else will be along shortly with ideas on that.

Good luck with the project.  It does look great.  If only looks could be translated into stability.....

As Wizard says, see if you can get some weight distribution advice from the makers of these things.

Jim

Hi Ian

First measure from the centre of the axle to the centre of the hitch.Next measure from the centre of the axle to the centre of your ballast. Divide one by the other to get a ratio, which looks like it will be about ten to one.
For every kilo you want to take off the noseweight you need to add 10 kilos at the back. So if you want to reduce noseweight by 10 Kg you need to add 100 Kg at the back.
Totally agree, stick with the motor you have.
Regards
Jim

Hi Jim its 10 foot from axle to front and 2 1/2 foot from axle to back, so by your method explained i make it 4 to 1 ratio. If you look at the pic the middle of the ballast is smack bang on line with the curve at the bottom of the rear wheel arch. So by this would the calculations be as follows? for 10kg less on the nose i would need to add 40kg at the rear? if so this is not bad i guess.

Looks about right to me Ian. Should be pretty near anyway.
