The good bit is when folded up it only looks half as crap
Having said that while taking these pics 2 people have come up to me and said thats a nice little van you have and then a guy from down the street asked me if I want to sell it! (prob needs a chicken shed)
One of the good things about caravanning abroad, especially if you stay in smaller campsites or less popular areas, is you rarely see any shiny new Pegasuses (Pegasi??), just lots of weird and wonderful foreign makes, some of them extremely crappy!

Mine's the same, a 'vintage' (sounds better than crappy!) Dutch Kip caravan. Loved and used. And yes, no worries about a bit of damage if it occurred. No hot water, and a hand gravity lever pump for cold water, very mod! It had a titchy little wall based water carrier with a dribbly tap when I got it. Put a little fridge in, got it all wired up and had everything checked over, lovely!
And brilliant to tow, very lightweight and aerodynamic!
Couldn't care less about being posh and having everything new and matching and all that, life's too short.
Mine is actually called 'The Chicken Shed' as Kip translates to chicken in English! LOL
Yay for the vintage caravans, long may they live on!
Here's our crappy old van, paid £400 for her 18mths back, best £400 we have ever spent. She's dry extremely warm all the electrics work.
Four adults and one child have just spent a lovely 4 nights at mablethorpe in her (2 in the awning) all for £36, so yes you can have a crappy (old) van and still get away and have a good time.
------------- should have done it 10 years ago........
We got our Gladys 2 years ago, paid £185 for her due to a mahoosive dint in the front corner, she was sound in every other aspect. We replaced the damaged panel last week and she looks as good as 30 yr old new.
i know what you mean about 'where are the oldies?' we play 'spot the older 'van' when we're traveling and there aren't many, although we took her to a beltane festival at the weekend and she fit right in! it seems that all the old vans find loving homes with hippies.
Here's my 31 year old Caravan. I don't care what others think it has no mod cons just the basics but I love it. It always has people scratching their heads trying to work out how it unfolds & goes together. I've had various people asking questions about it.
These are the most recent pictures of our 2 very long weekends away.
We had an audience when we unfolded it yesterday!!
I don't have a crappy old caravan anymore but until 2 years ago I did, and I loved her sooooo much a 24 year old Bailey , we sadly outgrew her, but she has now passed to my sister who loves her as much as we did, my new van which is 5 years old is lovely all singing and dancing, but dosnt feel the same as the Bailey banger did.
I have no intention of keeping up with the joneses, we bought this swift it ticked all the boxes and we will keep it till it falls off it chassis (I hope it dosnt but you get what I mean lol )
Happy caravanning :)

Love it x

I have a 1982 Elddis Tornado and love my wee caravan, I have updated all the soft furnishings and it now looks very modern in the inside (photos on my gallery). It does look its age from the outside but when I'm pitched up I have the same holiday as everyone else around me.
I was away in it at the weekend and I said to the site owner,'bet you don't get many like this' his reply ' too right' . Everywhere I go I've always got the oldest caravan but I don't mind as I've worked hard updating it and am very proud of it.
When towing home yesterday I did pass one that looked older than mine, wanted to wave but had to concentrate on towing!
Can i join as well? we have a 1991 compass shadow and like me it looks ok if you drive past at 40 mph but we sold our 2006 bailey discovery because we just wasnt using it and bought this one. it has no hot water or oven and i have taken the cold water pipes out as well to make more room in the toilet or porta pottie room as it is. Everyone is different, i go with my mate who has a new van and a new towcar and we have just as good a time. Having said that we also camp as well and my sunncamp tent cost more than the caravan,
Hey Paul BB
I have a crappy old van (27 years old this year) and I'm proud of it. But I agree, I do wonder when we pitch up on site where all the others are. Me and my hubby do the "spot the van that's older than ours" game and as yet, we have not seen anyone with an older van on site in 3 years. We did see one in a car park on our return from holiday once.
As our van is in storage we tend to give it a wash once a year on the first site we go to in the spring - not before we do the "Spot a dirtier van than ours" game. Finally found one this year!
But all that aside, new or old van and car, satelite or no satelite, people do generally seem to be helpful and we just ignore anyone who turns their noses up.
I was browsing the mags the other day and asked myself exactly the same question as you - why isn't there a mag for our old vans? There was a regular article in one of the mags on how to caravan cheaply with an old van and towcar which I thought was great.... More of that would be good!

Took a break like everyone over covid, flogged the caravan and got a campervan!

I agree, I would love to see a mag for old vans. You can get a mag for old VW's and Mini's so why not caravans.
Want to see more articles about how restore an old caravan, other owners restoration stories - not pay £4 + for a whole load of marketing material on towcar of the year (which is usually expensive and huge) and caravans bigger than my house!
