Michael's link shows 100kg for the stabilizer/hitch.  That seems fine.

Just a little caution: Careful not to confuse the three different weights for noseweight: the hitch, the towball and the towbar.

I think there are 4 different weights, and this may answer earlier posts regarding 100 / 150 kg rating. The 3004 stabiliser has a rating and so does the al-ko a-frame, which I beleive is currently restricted to 100 kg and so is hte imiting factor.

You may well be right here.  I tried to find the spec. for the alko chassis etc but couldn't find anything which specifically related to noseweight.  You may had had more luck than I.

I am currently awaiting a reply from Al-ko regarding the possibility of increasing the plated weight limit as my caravan is 2000 kg and I could do with a higher noseweight than 100 kg. I will post response when\if I get one.

I'm a new caravanner. I went on the Caravan Club towing course, and they stressed the importance of noseweight, and of not loading up the back end.

However, my Bailey Ranger 540/6 appears to be very nose-heavy, whatever I do. I have a large 110 battery, which is towards the front, but can't move that. I only keep one gas cylinder, also at the front, but not really safe to put it elsewhere. Other than that, the front end is empty! I've moved everything to the axle area, which means stacking stuff on the toilet! Other stuff is further back, but the noseweight is consistently off the guage, so I don't even know what the weight is.

It does not appear that it's possible with this caravan to get the recommended noseweight - I've given up measuring it, as there's nothing further I can think of to do, to rectify the problem.

Any (not too technical, please!) help would be most gratefully received!

I never check the nose weight as long as you go steady and are a competent driver you'll be fine. What about before all this noseweight stuff came about? Did every caravan with a bit of weight in the front crash? No. The van wobbles you slow down simple, as long as there's a lot of the weight over the axle it'll be fine.

I have a similar problem to you Ecofrizz. We have moved nearly everything from the front except the gas bottle and battery and still cannot keep the noseweight down.

The only thing we can think of doing is relocating the battery. Its never been ideal, but since we upgraded to a 110 battery the noseweight problem has got worse. Moving the battery is going to be a pig of a job, but it looks like its our only option.

My advice would be , you know you have too much weight in the forward half of the caravan , so you place heavy items over the axle and it doesn't help a lot , what you have to do imo is gradually move the heavy items rearward past the axle center line until you get the nose weight you want .
I'm pretty sure you won't end up with them at the very back of the caravan before you get the correct nose weight .
What you should end up with is a correctly balanced caravan .

Obviously if you have the front locker stuffed with items you should make this as light as possible first , if you don't , you'd end up putting items to far to the rear which could give you the sea-saw effect ( heavy weight at both ends of the caravan ) .

You shouldn't not bother with nose weight because the caravan can be unstable when towed , the towcar , towbar towball and hitch have limits you shouldn't exceed . If you carry too much weight on the hitch you could end up with a very light car on the front , causing a loss of grip on the front wheels .

HI

The balance point of a caravan (single axel anyway) is usually about 2-3ft infront of the axel so placing items you will be taking over the axel will in effect load the back of the caravan and therefore will lift the front and reduce the nosewieght.

I have the same issue with noseweight as my car only allows 55kg but the caravan empty has 90Kg on the nose.  once the 'van is loaded with all my gear the noseweight drops to around 65Kg.  I have started taking the battery out and putting it in the car instead and this gives me the perfect noseweight and it tows like a dream.

Cheers

Richard

Just to be different, we seem to have the opposite problem - we can't get our noseweight heavy enough. We have a Calor lite bottle in the front locker, the hitchlock & wheel clamp, blocks of wood and all the hoses and handles. We have to put the aquaroll and wastemaster in the front of the van, wedged between the seats and have absolutely nothing at the back in the bathroom. With all this, we can only ever get the noseweight to 70k.
Out MTPLM is 1368 and, I think, due to having a motor mover, we're almost up to the limit.
Anyone got any ideas?

Ab

Hi Ab , 70kg doesn't sound to bad to me , you could get a plastic box and put your tins in it and put it with the aquaroll etc .

Thanks Wizard, good idea. Don't you thinks it's odd though that we have to cram everything at the front to get the noseweight up? I wondered if we were doing something wrong but I can't think of anything. Maybe we just have a bum-heavy van!

Hi Ab , do you have a cooker past the axle going rearwards , if you do and you also have a full bathroom , a spare wheel carrier , and maybe a motor mover too , all behind the axle that could explain things .

I bet there's some clever so and so out there with a formula that will tell you how much difference a set weight will make to your noseweight when placed at different distances from the centre of gravity (fulcrum?).  Unfortunately that person isn't me!!!....

What's 75Kg like to lift? Like when you crank up the jockey wheel that is 75Kg, if you lifted that by the hitch, how difficult is that to lift for the average man (or woman)?
