Some years ago I had a caravan for sale , while I was giving it a good clean and polish outside my house two Irish speaking women appeared from no where and asked if it was for sale , it took me by surprise so much that I said yes and invited them in to take a look , they moaned about every thing in the caravan and then tried to haggle the price down , by now I'd started thinking , as soon as I said the damp is hardly noticeable now, they screamed I was trying to rip them off ??? and left . The whole episode was weird and although they were women , it was quite scary , they were quite aggressive when they started trying to haggle .
To give the caravan a little extra protection until i sold it I attached a rape alarm to the handbrake , if anyone tried to move it they'd set the alarm off , I tucked the alarm under the caravan frame, so it would be going for a while before they would be able to silence it .

Our newest caravan is now kept in storage .

we have had simaler here as our vans stored at home. every week we get the scrap men coming past. my nabours car transport traile was stollen a few months back we spotted it happending and luckly they have it back thanks to pics took quickly on my phone.

chatting to one of these scrap dealers at my sisterd houes i asked why they paid so much attention to oldre van and they said thats what they like to use there not easly spotted. as ours is a 1980 van  It was one of the reson we painted her pink and it seams to have helped shes easly soptted now and stand out like a sore thumb. but i think what ever you do is not a garrantee of safety just a slight deterenat.  anyone that comes asking about your van allways say your storing it for a relative so if the vans not there they dont think the houes is empty

Interesting that Mrs. Anorak - the lead has disappeared from the local crematorium here too (is nothing sacred) as well as local schools etc. and we have these flat bed trucks round 2 - 3 times a day at weekends.

I don't think the original poster was over reacting....sounds like you have every reason to be suspicious.

You'd think the scrap collectors wouldn't be able to afford the rising fuel prices , but they're round our way every couple of days scavenging for metal , i do get the feeling if it's not tied down they'll have it . I expect the vans selling carpet will be round soon . Can't knock them as they are making a living , just so long as it's legal  .

Hobby was the make of choice for a long time for the Travellers.

Since the changes in the Law in Eire, the Travellers have directed their attention to Motorhomes - especially large 6 wheel vehicles

You can help yourselves by fitting trackers and also the large adhesive letters and numbers on the roof. All the Ports have number plate recognition and if the plates don't tally then you might just get your pride and joy back

Do you know if there were ever any arrests on this theft?

A friend of mine had the gas pipes stolen from the outside of his house the other week due to the high value of metals at the moment. The police told him that 70% of reported crime at the moment is about metal being stolen, be it lead, copper whatever. So I also think you are right to be cautious.

wow, it's unbelievable the amount of stuff people will take.  No respect for others property, only what they can get for themselves.  I like the idea of large numbers on the roof.  I did want to put self-adhesive stickers on it, but hubby wouldn't, maybe now he'll change his mind.

Wizards rape alarm is a fab idea, too.

Hi, wizard, "i do get the feeling if it's not tied down they'll have it . I expect the vans selling carpet will be round soon . Can't knock them as they are making a living , just so long as it's legal  ".    even a lot of the carpet are knocked off.

Current Scrap value of Ford Mondeo = £400.  Washing machine c. 50-80.

Re-sale value of Ford Mondeo = £100

My personal view is NOT to be worried re. travellers/gypsy folk.  They're millionnaires, not criminals per se.

Police in all UK counties know them personally & watch them.  It's most unlikely that having shown their face they will commit a crime....these are intelligent people who stay within the Law, are con=artists, will con you, confuse you.

you did the right thing.

interestingly a travellers pick up was stopped near us yesterday , massively overloaded and with nothing strapped down.the police had it towed away , so good on them !!

we got 2 or 3 a day down our street always well loaded with scrap. makes you wonder if its all legally obtained ??
