I would be inclined to keep the legs nearer the normal position so as to support the stand further from the base. While the wide base may appear more stable, it also gives the wind more leverage to topple it over than if there was some support further up. Better still would be some guy ropes attached near the top and pegged between the legs.
As for the satellite finders, they are all much of a muchness. (is that a local saying, doesn't make a lot of sense!) They are all very similar. I find the compass that comes with the kit useless though. I normally set mine up roughly looking at the others in the area and use the satellite finder to get onto the satellite. There is a signal meter built into most receivers. I assume you have a rebadged Silvercrest in the kit.
