Don`t be too upset if the kids are not as enthusiastic as you were when you were a kid . Especially as they get past 10 . Sharing the bedroom with Mom and Dad is not something most of them look forward to . Invest in awning bedrooms to give them privacy if they feel self conscious about sharing personal space .

Thanks everyone.
I've been checking everything on the caravan and have added some extra power points. Checking all the sealing and renewing where I think it needs it, full clean out. Sorting out changing my butane bottle for a propane one with suitable regulator.
I've just bought a new step, levelling kit, chocks, noseweight gauge, smart charger, toilet chemicals and suitable paper, fire extinguisher, fire blanket, smoke alarm and carbon monoxide detector, crockery, utensils, iron, wheel clamp, kettle.
There's other stuff but my head is fried.
I want to do it all properly and so still have a list of stuff to get.
I'm really frustrated as I want it all set up and ready to go but don't want to overlook anything and ruin my first outing so I have be patient. Not one of my qualities :)
I'm going to try to and do an overnighter next weekend somewhere close-ish if I get everything sorted.
Wish me luck lol.

hi from me too and welcome, the missus and me started camping a few years ago in tents, just as a means to get away from it all at short notice, we took to it so much we went from a 2 man to a 3 man to a 4 man tent (just for the 2 of us) and all the tranklements in a matter of months, last year we upgraded to a little 2 berth tin tent ( a caravan) and now wonder how we ever coped in a canvas one.

am sure you and your family will love every minute

Hi

Congrats on becoming a tin-tenter.  Just one thing I noticed in your post syemon.  You mentioned 'suitable' toilet paper.  I'd just like to point out that you don't need special stuff for caravan loos.  Just your normal supermarket loo roll will be fine.  It's true to say that the very top quality toilet tissue doesn't break down very quickly, so the thinner, cheaper stuff might be a better option - but absolutely no need to 'spend extra pennies' on the speciality caravan stuff.  Indeed, I had forgotten that you could buy special stuff until you mentioned it.

French loo roll is particularly suitable - very flimsy!  LOL!

I didn't know that.
Anything that saves money I'm all for.
I'm on a budget and it seems that I may not have anticipated everything I need.
The good thing is I'm investing in future holidays so after the initial pain I will gain next year and after that.

I want all the basics to get us going. The posher bits and pieces will probably be picked up as and when I can afford it.

The first trip out close to home is a very good idea.   You are bound to forget stuff you need and it's not too far to travel to get it.

Any problems, post on here....you will find everyone very helpful

Welcome to caravaning and the site, it's a great hobby, and the kids love it.  Ours are as addicted as we are.

Hope you still enjoy it as much years later like us.

Four weeks to go to the next break, can't wait.

Welcome to caravanning!  We're new too and completely addicted.  Bought our first van end of October.  Now trading it in for another - don't remember seeing 'new van' on our list of things to get though!  To be fair there's nothing wrong with our existing van, it's just the new one's layout will suit us better (any excuse!).

I concur with other people - try and stay somewhere local for your first trip and ideally a site where they have a caravan accessories shop either on site or close by.  I thought we had everything covered before we got there, but still managed to need to buy some essential bits from the accessories shop that I hadn't thought of!

Enjoy!!

Oh yes, and don't be afraid to ask other campers on site if you're stuck and need advice - We've had to do that several times, and have always been met with a warm welcome and lots of freely given advice.
