It sounds to me as if the basic level of cover seriously limits the service you receive. In all cases (as in all types of insurance) it is wise to check the policy and the limitations. There are also differences between Mayday and Green Flag - although it is basically the same 'system' the policy wording/pricing is different.
We have the top level cover with Mayday which is cheaper than the top level cover with the AA & RAC and covers you for more, for the sort of cover we require. They will come out and change a light bulb and will tow me from Land's End back home to John O'Groats if that is where I lived. If I break down and I am towing, they will tow me to the site I have already pre-booked, and if the car is not fixed, back home again at the end of the stay. As I have personal cover, if I am travelling as a passenger with anyone else, the car I am travelling in automatically has exactly the same cover.
For those who have said they can only be recovered to the nearest garage, it is because you probably have 'Roadside Assistance' with Mayday (or some direct equivalent directly with Green Flag). If you look at the details, it clearly states:
"Roadside Assistance provides a roadside repair service which should get you on your way again. If not, you your car, and up to seven passengers will be taken to the nearest garage, where you can arrange repairs."
