Hi all.

This one made me laugh

Its not a screw down thing your needing for a nine stone pup its a lamp post

i tried tethering her to the 3 seater garden swing but she could pull that across the patio,so i might try and use the wheel clamp and hope that holds.

thanks for all the replies and the laugh's lol.

barry

I would put the wheel clamp round its neck..not tie it to it..

Can you imagine trying to feed it for the week.it would have to get a job..

There was a post on caravan talk forum a few months ago from a group who belong to a national club fir Newfoundlands. They were warning other firum members that they will be visiting a certain site. Do a search for it and get in touch with them.

From my own experience we had our two springers attached to one and they pulled the ring off that the line attaches to. We now put the line around the whole stake now.

fallen agnel - that made me snigger and reminded us that our 2 JRs pulled theirs out of the ground at Ferry Meadows CC site when a couple of the millions of rabbits came within sight of them! Fortunately they stopped when we shouted them! We hadn't screwed the stake into the ground far enough -lesson learnt!

That Newfoundland pup looks gorgeous but wouldn't fancy her on our bed in the caravan - she certainly wouldn't have any trouble getting onto the bed as our wee little JRs do!

What a lovely post this is!

We have 2 labradors that we tie to the screw in stake or tow ball and though the screw in stake will hold tight so far the youngest has pulled his collar off, broken the clip that clips the lead onto the collar and snapped the lead trying to escape :o

So as you can see its not just the tether that needs to be looked at but all the stuff its attatched to lol

Either Pets at Home or Pets r us sell a dog spike that is not the screw type.

It is a steel spike with two fins about half way down its length.

You push the spike in as far as you need. There is a steel dome head on it with a

swivel that takes a plastic coated cable.

We have found that one of these can hold our springer and our cocker spaniels.

they are not cheap

Heres a thought..... dont tie the dog to your awning, just tie it to someone elses awning, that way if it runs around the campsite causing lots of damage, then you can just say its not your dog. lol

On a serious note tho... we had a screw in tether and my dog managed to unscrew it because he worked out that if he hooked his rope over the top of the handle then walk around the spike carefully he could just walk round anticlockwise and unscrew the whole thing. Clever little sh*te! so we tied him to the tow ball.... he ate the back bumper and the wing mirror off the car whilst we were eating tea. After that we never took him with us again.

A freind of mine used to keep goats and he used to just fasten them to a couple of spare wheels, the weight of them slowed them down so they couldnt be bothered dragging them around. Goats weigh in at around 11 stone.

We used one for our x/lab/border collie which was fine until she chewed through her lead. so we switched to a length of chain, thats when she pulled it out of the ground. So the next time we hooked it onto the towball of our car at the time, which was a Volvo. Some kid kicked a football past the car. Our dog took off after the ball and took up all the slack in the chain. next thing we knew the dog was on her back looking somewhat dazed and the car alarm was going off.

Our dog was fine after that, but we were suprise that she had given the car enough of a jolt to set the alarm off.

So if a x/lab/border collie could do that think what a newfoundland could do.

When you wake up in the morning to the sounds and sights of the campsite, ask yourself one question.....who's nicked my tent?????

Hiya,

Can I suggest anyone worried about tethering their dogs, large or small, quiet or lively/noisy spends time getting their dogs used to being tethered in as many different places as you go before you head off camping, if possible?

I used to help with a dog training school, both in and outdoors, so my Springers had to get used to being tethered to one side of the venues watching classes from an early age.  Consequently, I've never had trouble with them coping whilst camping or under pub tables when we eat out whilst away

OH's G.S.Pointer, on the other hand, was rarely even on a lead before we started taking him camping, so getting used to it was more stressful for him.  He's pretty strong and athletic so we started off using the vehicle as the tying point.  Now he's used to it, the corkscrews work very well, or indeed just telling him to stay, lead or no lead.  It's just been a harder job to teach him.
