Gary, Thanks for the advice. Very helpful.

As this is an ongoing problem and Garys reply makes perfect sense would the mods consider it as a sticky ?

Hi Chalkie, I just paid for the gas, £22, now I'm propane only, I'll be changing my other 2 propane bottles for Calorlite once they're empty too.

told by the dealer that the black hoses were more susceptible to this problem and that people that had fitted the stainless steel hoses rarely if ever had the issue.

I heard that one too, not sure how much truth is in it, but the gist of the arguement was that the plasticiser was being leeched out of the rubber hose. The cure was a stainless steel one or at least positioning the regulator higher on the bulkhead as the 'oil' didn't run uphill into it and block it.

That would be nice? my first sticky topic!

But no use if it's not read, I did say 'please' when I said no one mention the rubber hose is at fault

Black, Orange, even Pink with Yellow spots, there is simply nowhere near enough in a short piece of hose for the hose to be at fault, IT'S COMPLETE TOSH

Hi, I will agree with Gary, "Heavy Ends" has been a problem for years, spent many a day clearing out of Static Vans gas systems in the sixties and seventies, as for leeching from the hose, well XXXXXXX

So how come I have oil at the inlet of my boiler which is on the wall of an upstairs room, 12 feet above the regulator of my central heating system?

Calor Gas Propane. Worcester Bosch Boiler. Oil found by Bosch Service Engineer.
Calor Gas say that the oil could not possibly come from their gas!

Well they would say that, wouldn't they?

'oil does not come from their gas'... spot on it don't... so not actually lying then!.

The gas only acts as the propellent, the 'oil' is in the bottle beforehand and the gas forces it out much like a giant aerosol.

As though the bottle is not designed as an aerosol, the oil needs to be above the gas, perhaps trapped in the neck of the valve?.
This is the basis of my theory regarding how to possibly avoid it happening to you.

Can I ask then how roughly your bottles were treated prior to connection and turning on?
I ask because assuming your using 47kg bottles? these being so heavy and tall, any oil settles to the bottom and they don't then normally suffer from this issue

Rolling along the floor though would certainly stir up any oil present inside?

Hi Gary, Thanks for your input.

The gas is indeed in 47kg cylinders and are delivered by lorry then hand truck and the cylinders are changed by the Delivery Driver.

I have never seen them lain down on the ground or anything as they are always kept vertical.

Sorry I've since edited my post to include rolling them but you must have been reading my thoughts!

I don't though fully understand it reaching so high, once it gets into the pipework the gas will move it along, but not come across it reaching that high before.
One instance I know off was a caravan cooker starved of gas, the oil was blocking the pipe as it turned up at the bottom near the floor and you could hear the gas 'gurgling' as what little could, forced it's way through?
The noise was actually how the problem was found!

I assume your still using 37mb which is only 0.5psi, so perhaps it's the far bigger diameter pipe and the shear volume of gas flowing?

Have a look at the picture on my gallery, did it look anything like that?
In truth the picture is deceiving, it is actually more yellow than green.

Hi Gary, It was a clear liquid, but with the consistency of light machine oil when you rubbed it between your fingers.

This installation has been on the go for 5 or 6 years now and from what you are saying, this could have happened at any time over that period and is not a build up over a period of time.
I guess one bad batch could have been the culprit.

By the by, the pipe that carries the gas from the regulator is uninsulated as it travels up the side of the house and then through the wall to the boiler and I was wondering if the air temperature had a bearing on this problem.

hi . i have a big 1200litre tank in the garden .gets filled by calor its possibly 20 yr old .dont seem to have any probs with it. its been empty once that i know . wonder if heavy ends do in fact build up in the tanks at home . or is it that the bottles get used for other things and the likes of calor get the blame. cant be building up much as they do seem to get loads in when they fill it, got 1117 litres in it last time and it wasnt empty. will ask the driver next time what he knows about it all. cheers alan.

Clear liquid? the liquid should be bright yellow, least this is only colour I've seen and I've seen a lot!
Also I don't see how uninsulated pipe matters at all, after all the cylinder is not and should not, be insulated and propane is good to minus 47C!

Alan, I very much doubt bottles are used for other things, is your tank ever pressure tested?

Well airs air but I don't know if a bottle once modified is used again for gas?
Even if so, the numbers would be tiny
