We are not stopped near fuel filling. The caravan parking is invariably as far away from anything as possible.

When we stop, we light the fridge on gas, get the kettle on on the gas hob if we want a hot drink. Even run the gas heating if it is cold.

We set the table, get out the food, and enjoy a relaxing lunch, with a snooze afterwards.
so do we on overnight stops tea and toast when we get up

From the Caravan Club's leaflet

5. Gas Operation Caravan refrigerators can be operated on both types of LPG (see separate data sheet on the subject). It is important that the gas pressure shown on the data plate corresponds with your gas regulator. Because of safety risks, it is strongly recommended that you do not operate on bottled gas whilst on tow. A naked flame is prohibited at petrol stations, motorway service areas and in most tunnels.

You cannot use any gas appliance, portable or fitted in your caravan, at a Motorway Service Area.  This includes running the fridge on gas.  Even if there is no sign, it is illegal.

No they don't. There must be someone who will try to push the rules, but it's just plain lunacy to ignore safety rules. I would hope they would be caught quickly.

Oh dear! We've been breaking the rules for about 20 years then! I've only once ever seen a sign that said using a caravan stove in a MSS was prohibited, and that was this year at Allen water MSS on the way up to Scotland.

As for the argument over leaving a an unattended I saw it happen on a Traffic Cops programme and the cops themselves said it wasn't a unique hit, well - that's enough for me. If you want to risk it with your van that's up to you, but don't blame others who want to do everything they can to protect what's theirs!

Thanks everyone for your input. It's great to get tips from those more experienced than myself. I think for the time being, my approach will be steadies down, big flask and stay with the van as I don't want to be a statistic even if the probability of having my van stolen is very small. I'll certainly keep an eye on future forums and hopefully you will all be as helpful when I return from my imminent trip undoubtedly with more questions. Thanks again.

Hi, Have to agree with Jim,

I have only ever seen one service area where it said using the gas was prohibited.

Why should it be prohibited?

We are not stopped near fuel filling. The caravan parking is invariably as far away from anything as possible.

When we stop, we light the fridge on gas, get the kettle on on the gas hob if we want a hot drink. Even run the gas heating if it is cold.

We set the table, get out the food, and enjoy a relaxing lunch, with a snooze afterwards.

That is why caravans are as far away from petrol vapours as possible, 5 or 6 cars filling up with petrol will cause a lot of vapour and can drift some distance, prohibiting the use of gas will reduce the risk of explosion or fire, yours gas will draw in surrounding air through your vents, there could be petrol vapours being drawn in as well, End of care free holiday. Why not try an AC invertor plug in DC socket in car use your small AC kettle, or use flask.

I bought a pump pot as they hold more than a flask. (Argos)

I know the filling stations are some distance away from the parking area:

But take a look at the ground in the parking area

It's splattered with oil, diesel and petrol stains etc...mmmm, nice fire hazard.

I think I'll just stick with using the pump pot for a cuppa.

It amazes me how blaze people can be with the dangers of petrol vapour, having owned a filling station I am well aware of the risk of fire and explosion petrol vapour carries. in it's liquid form petrol is very safe and will not burn but given the right conditions petrol vapour will ignite many meters away from it's liquid source that's why using gas cookers etc on service stations is not acceptable we don't object to paying a bit more for a brew at the services it's worth it to have somewhere to break the journey

Absolutely right. Once you have experience of a petrol fire, it changes your perspective a bit.

So how far away from a fuel filling area is safe? How far do these vapours travel?

The places we use,and we only do motorway stops 2 or 3 times in a year, the caravan areas have all been well away from the fuel filling, something like over 300 metres at least.

We are mainly on non-motorways and using lay-bys. Abroad we use the Aires that are just picnic ones, no fuel.

Judging by the number of cigarette ends we see lying around, there seems to be plenty of people walking around smoking in the car parks much closer to the danger area.

We always take a flask of boiling water if our journey dictates a stop. Not that we're mean, but the stuff sold as coffee in MSS isn't.

No-one else has mentioned one of the less savoury aspects of stopping in the HGV area, and that is the disgusting, unhealthy practice of truckers avoiding the loos and peeing by their vehicles. Surely others have noticed this (Leicester Forest East is a prime example), you can smell them as soon as you open the car door!

For this reason we now avoid Motorway Service Stations (except if desperate for fuel). Instead we leave the motorway at any junction and take pot luck on finding a nearby layby (sp?. Much nicer.

Rant over

How long is a piece of string?
Depends on too many variables, such as wind direction, pressure, geography, etc.
I've certainly seen 500mtr exclusion zones around sites, and sometimes more.
