Personally, I prefare to take my own stuff over to the loo with me, and always carry a hand gel mini bottle in my bag or pocket for use after using the toilet or before eating whilst out and about. Its not just door handles in loo blocks that become contaminated by peoples unwashed hands, its also the tops of taps and the leavers of the soap dispensers themselves as people touch them after leaving the toilet whilst their hands are still unclean, likewise with the toilet rolls unless they are of the 'one sheet at a time' dispensing canisters such as found in some motorway service station loos. I certainly wouldnt use a loo roll that had been lurking on the back of the toilet cystern, or worse still on the cubicle floor as i have come across in some sites toilets.

If we need loo roll we always carry the small compact Andrex packs which are ideal for the job, and easy enough to keep in your pocket or bag.

Julia

I agree with you. Camping in the 70's often meant taking own loo roll and soap. These days we at least have hand gel and Andrex do a spray suitable for hands and loo seat, door handles etc. However I think loo roll and handwash should be provided if this site is not a simple basics site.

As for people using loo and not washing hands, I'm a hospital volunteer and part of my remit is to notify if loos need extra clean, loo paper or hand wash, also to remind anyone who is about to exit without washing hands. Been sworn at or told to mind my own business - and blank refusal. Some hope then at a camp site if people ignore notices or verbal reminders in hospital.

Don't get me started about people in supermarkets going straght from the loo to handle fresh fruit and veg.

What if you are a bit absent minded and just head off to the loo forgetting about the soap and toilet roll.  You can always wash your hands when you return to your outfit but you can hardly wait to wipe your bum!!  We've never been anywhere that didn't have loo roll and soap.

They're being skinflints.

Hi ally b, Maybe the owners grows rhubarb  leafs for that.

I know this might sound ridiculous, but it really is true, when I was in Paris way back in the 1960s my friend and I had to use a public toilet in the city and in each cubicle there was a hole in the ground with 2 places for your feet and a pile of leaves for your backside

Leaves? Must have been a luxury one. They generally have nothing at all.

Like you we tend to take some loo roll with us on way to the loos just in case,  we also use the hand gel stuff (or wipes) but that's not the point really imo !

As regards people nicking stuff well yes some do but they are far & away in the minority & as said in several previous posts there are plenty ways site owners can get around that problem - it's not rocket science - just penny pinching !

It's not good enough I'm afraid, if people have such an aversion to providing suitable neccessities they shouldn't go into the business in the 1st place.

My answer is why should I have cra* in my own loo which I have to empty when I'm paying to use the site facilities ?

At any rate we don't spend all day & night sitting in the 'van - sometimes the onsite loos are nearer !

Greetings 664 Dave,

You said "Loads of sites in France do not have either, you take your own-c'est la vie!"

Literal translation "C'est la vie" "That's Life"

Too right that's life. Millions of the little bu**ers on your hands if you don't wash.

How can 22miles of water equate to such a difference in attitude beats me.

We are totally "self contained" but do use site facilities where they are good.

Only on the continent have we found sites without loo roll and soap.

Using site or public toilets both abroad and in UK, I have actually been very surprised by how many people use the toilet and then walk out without washing their hands!!

If that particular site is worried about thieving of paper and soap , they could supply the stuff that no one nicks .
Carbolic soap mounted on a bar with a nut and washer to secure it and shiny IZAL . We had it in so many loos at one time , particularly council ones and it was rarely nicked .
Izal spreads one side or sandpapers with the other but does the job in a pinch . Carbolic soap may not smell nice but it is the best for hygiene but no one likes the smell so it doesn`t get nicked often .

Back in the 60's i can remember one of the big brewery chains going mad on installing all kinds of vending machines into its pub toilets, in addition to the usual ones you find today, you could buy a Toilet pack for 6d, complete with a leaf of Pears soap which was impregnated onto thick paper, a large paper towel to dry your hands, and a few sheets of folded Izal type loo roll.

Then if you left a pong, for an extra 6d out of another machine, you could buy a squirt of several top brands of perfume to freshen you and your surroundings up!

As goes for bar soap, its amazing how many bacteria live and breed on the bar itself between washes, hence its never used on hospital wards or doctors surgeries unless the patients bring their own.

I think everyone knows by now that the French and a bar of soap don't spend any time in the same place , so it comes as no shock to me that they have a similar relationship with a toilet roll , ugh ! ,,

I don't think there is anything wrong with a site not providing loo roll and soap so long as they tell you this or put a sign up before you go in!
