We bought a double memory foam topper then ended up cutting it clean down the middle as it was a pain to store. We store them each in a single topper cover which has straps on each corner to keep the topper in place when rolled up. They can then be popped in a foot locker for stoarge when not in use. When being used as toppers they lie nicely side by side in their cotton covers.

My "new to me" caravan is a bit uncomfortable.
Should I be using the mattress with this right side up, or is supposed to be bottom side up.

Previous owners said they used it wrong side up.

Thanks.

We are also interested in mattress topers for the caravan. Just picking up on the comment about forgeign memory foam mattress toppers having a toxic smell and therefore better to by British made.
Can anyone who has purchased 3ft ones give any recommendation where to buy as when you look online it generally doesn't say where its made.
Thanks in advance

We bought a king size 2.5cm Coolmax Comfort memory foam mattress topper from www.memoryfoamwarehouse. It was about £50 and well worth the money. I certainly can't feel gaps or anything.

I got some nice cotton sheets, velcro'd them together like a huge pillowcase, popped the mattress topper inside so the topper and sheet are one, then all we have to do is throw it on top of the turned cushions, throw a quilt on and hey presto a huge comfortable bed (we also took out the middle drawers (didnt need any extra storage or cushions as the 'feet' cushions (dont know what else to call them!) fitted perfectly to replace where the drawers were and it makes a lovely U-shaped sitting area.

The OH fits the whole lot under the bed slats/seats during the day.

We never use our front V LARGE double, (aka even wider than King size), coz we prefer to snuggle up, (only 3' 7" wide),on the rear double made up from the rear dinette, that way we don't have to faff about putting it all away and getting it made up again every blessed day. When we need the front for extra sleepers, we tend to just use them as 2 singles coz they're really quite comfy that way. They must be coz our son and DIL use them as singles since the arrival of their 2 year old who goes on top of the 2 back cushions on the floor between them in his inflatable Readybed, (marvellous invention and he's particularly fond of his TreeFu Tom one, and they would certainly tell us if they were uncomfortable so it's not just us that manage perfectly well on the singles.

Anyhoo, because the rear double is so dinky widthways, it's hard to get a memory foam topper unless you have it made to measure, (too pricey for our liking, certainly never saw as cheap as £50, you jammy beggar lol), and over the years we've tried various things to use as a topper ranging from a thin single duvet to our current wonderfind! It's a double velour mattress topper from Dunelm Mill and only cost about £25 4 or 5 years ago and takes up much less space when stowed away en route to wherever we're going or coming back from. Because it's the bog standard double size and our liccle bed is well short of that, I find that there's plenty to tuck down over the sides keeping it nice and taut so disguising any slight gaps from movement that you can get between the cushions while the bed's made up. Our narrow double is, however, longer than your bog standard double bed would be so this also allows for a really tight fit lengthways too and we both find it very, very comfortable. As did our son and DIL when they used to get the rear double. All that's needed then is a quick shuggle of the velour topper each day to cover the gaps once again and Bob's yer uncle as they say.

We have a memory foam topper on our very high bed at home and luv it although it does mean buying King size sheets to go over the 8" thick bed mattress plus the couple of inches of topper. My main concern about having a memory foam topper for the tin tent, was the excess weight it would add, (coz our one at home aint no lightweight I can tell ya),plus the amount of storage space it would take up once released from it's vacuum pack and since we don't take a hoover away with us, we'd have no way to squash it back into a vacuum bag again.

Give the velour Mattress topper a go before forking out for a memory foam one, you might be pleasantly surprised. In fact, this year, for whatever reason, my hubby remarked that he'd been sleeping better than he ever had in our tin tent! Go figure!

We did the same - double topper from Dunelm Mill for £99, not cheap but has made such a difference and we had tried cheaper ones without getting the comfort we wanted.

Mind you, at this time of year and in this weather, we sleep in the awning annexe on a double height Intex Queen size 2in1 airbed. On a seasonal pitch so the awning and annexe stay up all season.

In our last caravan, 1996 Coachman Mirage, I took out the four cushions at the dinette end and put in a good quality 8'' high, small double mattress, 6'3'' x 4' added 2 inches of memory foam. Great nights sleep, I am 68. We had a bunk bed at that end which I took out to give 4'3'' width and cut down on the weight. Mattress weighed less than the cushions and bunk bed arrangement. Fixed bed, comfort and plenty living area. We have now upgraded to a caravan with an island bed.

We are contemplating buying a memory foam mattress topper as oh and I both have arthritis. B&M stores are doing singles at £24.99, double £34.99 and kingsize at £39.99. They are described as temperature sensitive and have zip off covers.

In our van the draws lift off and store under the bed when the bed is set up and slot back in place when not.
Maybe you could have your modified to be able to lift on and off too.

We bought one on offer from Argos. 3" deep and just cut it size. Just use a sharp Stanley knife to cut it very easily to whatever size you need

2 or 3" is best as 1" too shallow to make too much difference and over 3" you will sink too much and get enveloped and too hot!

Make sure your knee rolls are against wall when making up bed. We don't turn ours over

We use an old single sleeping bag unzipped and opened out. we tried a topper, but it was a massive thing to stash away during the day.

We have the same layout as you and have always made up the double bed at night as you have tried, with backrests to the middle.

Over two years we found that, with much fettling, one can iron out the ridges between the cushions that helps a lot; however the cushions were still very hard, which aggravated my wife's bad back after a few nights.

Last year, our third season, we bit the bullet and bought two Duvalay 5cm memory foam mattress toppers. We baulked at the expense but having used them on our three-week vacation last year I would buy them again at double the price! Our caravan is now more comfortable than our bed at home.

We have a 66cm and a 77cm topper, which exactly fits our 140cm wide bed with no discernable join felt by either of us.

We also got pillows and zip covers for the toppers, and find putting up and taking down the bed is rather quicker than when we used bottom sheets. They are a bit bulky but we keep them in the shower cubicle during the day, in storage bags which we also purchased at the time.

Bottom line: an expensive investment but they will last for years and years, so over time they are good value.
