only just purchased my motor Caravan. Im slightly confused about the whole of the "wild Camping debate. I ask this question why should one purchase a van with all mod cons cassette loos showers etc if you are only going to park up on sites with all these facilities. Surely providing you use proper facilities to get rid of your rubbish and empty your "grey waste" and of course the toilet cassette why shouldnt you wild camp once in a while?

A lovely way of life and we did enjoy it but there are a lot of people who really do not care about where they empty there thetfords out. Nor do they care that the verges they park on are eroding and getting worse every time someone goes onto them. They do not get a chance to recover as the weight of them cuts deep into the earth. But also some do not care how many rubbish bags (if indeed they even put it into bags) they scatter their filth for the wind to blow it all over. It was not about thise who a proper campers that respect their or others surroundings it si about thos e that could not care a less as long as they get their space to hell with everyone else. There are wild places that can be beautiful to see but at least let them be left beautiful when you leave for others to enjoy. But sadly not all people do care, and the number is getting bigger of those kind. But you can ask on site if you can empty out & fill again with water. There is no harm in asking is there? Better to pay a small fee and use them facilities to the full then go on your way, than dump it all on the heathland & moorlands. It is money going to the community around that have to pay more out to clean up & repair for what these (I cannot find a good name for them).do in damage. We are always noticing all the time we go on holiday peoples dumping what they do not want. Well neither do those living there want it. A problem getting bigger.

While the idea of emptying toilet waste randomly around the country side is not something I am condoning, I cannot help wondering where the wildlife empty their toilet cassettes in these regions.

Have you not seen their little nappies on, the English birds  get them from the pampers birdie chemist shop

The Haggis to the Tartan chemist.

The Welsh sheep to the Leekie chemist.

The Irish Leprechans to the Crock o Gold pharmacy by the Blarney stone bridge

We are going to change from caravan to moterhome and our idea is to wildcamp as well as using sites about every 3 days to empty and fill up.Neither of us  ever or will ever  leave as much as a crisp packet on the ground, we take the grandkids out and always take packup (tight yorkshire folk) if no bin the rubbish goes back in the bag till we get  home.I hate to see rubbish thrown down

Well said Beanpark. I've just finished a 16 day tour round our beautiful Scotland (using proper paid for sites) and OMG I saw the disgusting filthy mess on out Bonnie Banks that wild campers left. Shame on them they are spoiling it for us (as in the responsible tourers) People talk about travellers and the damage they do to our beautiful country well I have witnessed the destruction and mess that wild campers are doing. Shame on them !!! I do hope the law is changed and Scotland no longer tolerats wild camping. A pure shame but we need to protect our countryside

Hi, I agree with the postings regarding the dumping of rubbish and the emptying of the waste by some caravaner’s/motor home owners, unfortunately the biggest dumpers are tenters, and the people who do that are no better than animals, and should be prosecuted and find the £1000 under the fly tipping act. I DO NOT agree that the law should be changed to stop the freedom to roam in Scotland, that is one rite we have that is Free, and all we have to do is respect the land. We would all lose out if it ever came into being, more wardens patrolling the Lochs would help, but they can’t be every where at once, It is up to us to help put a stop to these dumpers, maybe a campaign with a phone number to report them, Shop a Dumper. I would have no hesitation in doing so, as these low life are costing me more in rates and community tax to pay to clean up their filthy mess, plus jeopardising my rite to roam in my place of birth.

Hi highlandguy, And Welcome to the forum, think you have come in at the deep end here. There is no reason that you should not wild camp most of or all the time, after all that’s what vans/motor home where built for, it is the actions of those who do not respect the land or the rites of others to use it, and dump their waste and rubbish, that could stop the freedom to roam and wild camp, then you would not have choice to wild camp, no real need for toilet or shower in van as they would be on site, and would be as is, there personal choice, to caravan the way they wish, and any mod cons they wish to have in their van.

hello highlandguy and welcome to the forum ,, when i bought my m/h it was my choice to have all the comforts of home , on wheels , and specifically to be able to go wildcamping , and thats what i did ,, and going by your post , in exactly the same fashion as yourself , in a responsible way ,,

to be able to wake up , open the blinds and see the fantastic unrestricted views whilst your doing what you love ,, doesn't get any better , apart from when you sit outside with your cup of tea and a hot bacon buttie and watch the world go by ,, or when ,,,,

nth devon , wildcamp ,,

There are also a lot of small, very inexpensive sites where you will find fresh water and waste disposal only. These are the CLs and CSs operated under licence from the Caravan Club and the Camping & Caravanning Club.

A "halfway house" between wild camping and full facility sites.

LEAVE - nothing but footprints

TAKE - nothing but memories

Is it really so hard to live by these rules when enjoying our beautiful countryside?

Its the idea of spending 50K on a motorhome and then being too tight to pay a few quid a night campsite fees to support the local economy that fries my brain.
Wild camping my a**e.

I have a motorhome and I usually use CL's and CC's but that is due to my being a female travelling solo.  That is a safety thing knowing that someone is somewhere near for protection.

That said, with my partner we frequently 'wild camp'.   We empty our black waste (toilet/thetford tank) call it what you like but the poohey bit! in the waste facilities at small sites and gladly pay the fee for doing so and for being able to empty grey waste (washing water) and fill up with fresh water.

No-one in Scotland or anywhere else whether free/wild camping should ever empty black pooh waste into a drain beside a road as they are STORM drains and NOT sewers!  They are designed for run off and rain water and not even for grey waste with bubbles!  Dirty water should always be disposed of via a proper facility.

We do not leave rubbish, we even pick up other peoples litter when they have picniced at sites .... they are not even tenters or tin tenters just tourists!

Regretably motorhomers are their own worst enemy at times .... I know of motorhomers being challenged when emptying waste into storm drains and being told not to by other motorhomers and their reply being to basically go forth and multiply! as it was their waste and this was a free site so they could ignore everything and do what they wished.... another time seeing motorhomers driving along sea fronts emptying grey waste water as they travel.... yucky and smelly and putting pressures on environments not designed to take it.  If you must dump grey water then do so responsibly .... rose gardens love it! and dry verges in drought but NEVER EVER EVER a sea front or residential road.

Then there are the motorhomes that park up on sea front or in areas and stay put for a week never moving .... unfair but not illegal and then councils just ban them ruining it for all.  As when banned we cannot park in the area let alone stay.

It is actions like that which will get councils banning motorhomes!  My motorhome is my vehicle when I am away and it is getting more difficult to find places to park and shop as towns become no-go zones due to stupid and irresponsible behaviour of the few.

Rant over.

We take memories and pictures (and other peoples rubbish) and leave only footprints and tyre marks!

Wild camping is fine and done responsibly

That's the plan we are going with.Wildcamp where allowed and suitable and book into a site every few days to get rid of rubbish, empty wastes, grab a good shower and refill water.

Best of both worlds and responsible.IMO.

I've "wild camped"-in the army and the acceptable thing was to dig a decent hole but even doing that you have to be wary of polluting water sources. We then used CL/CS's for 4 years,a good compromise between "wild camping" and the overbearing large sites.

Well said. They are becoming a menace in lots of popular places and stop other visitors and locals from parking and enjoying the facilities.

We did have an MH and never stayed anywhere other than on a site. We then realised what a waste of time and mony a MH was and are now enjoy caravanning to the full again.

We have met lots of disallusioned people who have sold their MHs including the 3 other people on our current CL!
