Hi all. Thanks for that advice. To give you an update - I contacted the dealer (Pedleys) in Coventry and was told that the price on caravan finder was wrong and it was £300 more. Plus there was a delivery charge of £500. This made the difference £600 which became less tempting given possible issues with warranty work.

I did phone my local dealer Discover who said that they would do warranty work on it. Didn't go so far as to get that in writing though!

Anyway this morning I then had a call from Discover who have given way a bit by giving me a voucher for £230 towards the extras i need. We've sold our old van including kit. So I'm happy now that we are getting a good deal and I know I won't have any service issues.

Had the price difference been over £1000 as I originally thought and given that my local dealer said they would do any repairs and warranty work then I probably would have taken the chance, but the price difference just wasn't worth the risk in the end!

Thanks for all the advice folks!

didn't Discovery go into administration about a year ago and then got save at the last moment? It is wrong that Pedleys advertise the price without including the delivery charge. In fact it may be an offence. Good luck with your purchase.

If you look at this in a different way, you could put a different spin on it.
Even if you bought a van elsewhere, how does your local dealer know that you haven't just moved house to this area? Surely a dealer would want to keep a caravanning potential future customer happy so as to get the sale next time.
I am sure that a dealer would not turn away all customers who didn't buy vans directly from them.

You'd think so wouldn't you

At my last service i did the usual round of phoning all the local approved Bailey agents for prices. One particular dealer in Chesterfield gave me a price for the service and then went on to tell me that they wouldn't touch it for any warranty work! So any faults found during the service would be the responsibility of the supplying dealer. So, regardless of the price the quoted i wasn't going to waste my time taking the van there - nice piece of customer service

Hi

I traveled about 120 miles away to get our new Adria.  There is an adria dealer not 1 nile away but they wanted full price and nothing thrown in.  Spoke with the chaps I bought did buy from on phone and told them my budget and what I would like for that including an awning, battery, gas, leveling ramps. 3004 alko hitch, water carriers, etc and they played witht the figures and were able to meet the budget and provide everything I wanted.

The saving in total I calculated to nearly £1500.  It can be a pain taking it back to get serviced every year but we just make a holiday out of it.  I take it up on a Sunday morning,  Pick it up with wife and kids on the Friday and take it somewhere near to them and stay the weekend.

Cheers

Richard

You can't really blame the dealer as they make very little from warranty work.

We had ours from Discover & got loads thrown in, really push them, ours wasn't even new & they threw in the battery, aqua roll, wastemaster & a full size awning.

We know a guy who used to work for them and they make 3-4k at least on a new caravan and often more so they can easily throw in a few decent extras and still make a healthy profit.

We did a similar thing.  Set out from home Sunday lunchtime with van fully packed.  Stayed overnight at Church Farm, Salisbury.  Van in to Lady Bailey at Blandford 9am on Monday morning.  Drove into Poole, sat on beach at Sandbanks.  Phone call from Service department at about 2pm to say the van was ready.  Picked up van at about 3pm and then went on our way to Devon and Cornwall for four and a half weeks.  Very good service from Lady Bailey, and fitting everything around our holiday requirements.

It seems a real hit and miss game if buying from far away, what a nuisance it would be to take your van in for service to be told that things needed fixing and that you had to collect it, book it in to your supplying dealer and then take it there

I bought my new Olympus from Lady Bailey saving about £1400 on my local dealer round trip of around 230 miles, Local dealer would not budge on new price or part ex price.

I use an approved service centre  Carafit in Crosshands for all work service and warranty no problems.

No choice save yourself some money.
